Postkarte. Condition: Gut.

Leather Bound. Condition: Fine. From the Paintings; Photographs (illustrator). First and Limited, Signed Ed. Fine Condition. Chateau De Boissia, Clairvaux, Jura, France, by the Trianon Press (plate reproduction) and Dijon, France by Imprimerie Darantiere (text) both for the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal; 1959. First edition and limited, signed edition. Fine; pristine. Unspeakably handsome. Small white marks on frontal scan are reflections from the protective mylar. See scans. Remarkably illustrated; color plates from the original rock art in the original varied earth tones (reds, browns, yellows, whites, and black), as well as some in B&W, some as photographs, and other photographs in B&W. Rather mammoth Folio, 14½x11ĵ, quarter morocco and linen; plain acetate jacket. Signed by Abbe Henri Breuil at the limitation page. Unusually, apparently an out-of-series example, one of 120 copies. Of this book, 1,000 were unsigned, 30 more were to have been numbered in roman numerals, 90 more in standard arabic numerals, and 26 were to have been lettered, with all three of the latter forms signed by the Abbe Breuil. This copy is in the quarter leather and linen binding of the numbered and signed issues, and is signed by Breuil at the limitation page, though after the word "No." on that page, there is no numeral, roman or arabic, filled in by Breuil. See scan of the limitation page. A remarkable work of artistic beauty and rich, yet readable scholarship on the cave art found at the The Brandberg, a vast (25 km by 21 km) monadnock rising from the sparse plains and deserts of Namibia. Apparently a source of religious inspiration to aboriginal populations of the region for thousands of years, the gorges, ravines and rock faces of The Brandberg ("Fire Mountain") are filled with cave art ranging in age from several hundred to unknown thousands of years (but definitely, for many, more than 1,800 years, a point of age determination beyond which dating becomes impossible at these sites, for technical reasons). Noted French palaeoarchaelogist Abbe Henri Breuil and others spent much time tracing, cataloguing and recreating these drawings. It's a tossup whether the non-verbal or verbal experience of this volume is the greater thrill. Beautiful edition designed by Arnold Fawcus and produced by the Trianon Press; No. 3 in the Rock Paintings of Southern Africa series. Fine, flawless, pristine in a like clear acetate jacket; has the aspect of a virtually new production, though it is nearly half a century old. Please see scans. lg7. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. London: Trianon, 1955. Number 28 of a first edition, printed on rag paper signed by Henri Breuil limited to 100 copies (pp. 31, illustrations). Folio (37.5 x 29 cm) in original half leather over tan cloth, gilt titles, deckle edges. With a coloured frontispiece, a small map in text, 13 coloured plates (2 folding, images numbered I-XXII), and 5 collotype plates with photographs (1 folding, each plate with several photographs). The so-called "White Lady", a rock face painting near the foot of Brandberg mountain in Namibia, was discovered in 1918 by the German explorer Reinhard Maack. The book's text describes the apparent origin of the painting and the researchers' excavation methods. The painting shows a ritual dance, and the drawing is in fact a representation of a male shaman. It was Henri Breuil (1877-1961) who coined the name "White Lady" and suggested a relation to paintings at Knossos a bit of fanciful archaeology which implied a visitation by Mediterranean travelers (Maack suggested a warrior figure, but is was 1918 and there were still quite a few still around). Small abrasions to bottom edge and one tip, front hinge just starting; otherwise a Near Fine copy. Signed by Author(s).
