Philadelphia: Dr. D. Jayne & Son, (1918). 32pp. 6¼ x 3½ inches. Color printed wrappers. Short, closed tear to back cover; faint creasing to leaves throughout; good. A scarce promotional item and recipe cookbook from this ubiquitous Philadelphia patent medicine company, founded in the nineteenth century, wrapped in the trappings of wartime patriotism. From the publisher's preface: "The very great popularity achieved by our previous handbooks 'THE PRESERVING OF FRUITS,' 'HOW TO DO PICKLING' and 'HOW TO KNIT' has induced us to believe that this booklet 'WAR BREADS' will be a welcome source of information on this important subject. It has been our endeavor to produce booklets of real instructive value and permanent usefulness, and, as in the preceding editions, the recipes and instructions in this booklet have all been carefully selected from those suggested by persons qualified to give expert and accurate advice. While primarily the motive of producing these booklets is to bring again to your notice the merits of our preparations, Dr. D. Jayne's Family Medicines, it has been our unremitting effort to supply much needed information of such a kind, and in such a manner, as would be worthy of a business which has seen four great wars in its lifetime, and has enjoyed the confidence and patronage of its millions of friends during the past 88 years. June 1918.".
