Alceo Pastore al frontespizio: «All'on. dott. Alceo Pastore p. omaggio - devotiss. Diego Valeri. Rarissimo, non censito nel repertorio di Gambetti e Vezzosi. Lezione del poeta padovano Diego Valeri su «Il risorgimento» di Giacomo Leopardi, tenuta nel 1910 per l'Istituto Sociale d'Istruzione di Brescia. Scritta nell'aprile del 1828 dopo un periodo di aridità poetica, «Il risorgimento» riflette sia la disillusione del poeta rispetto a tutto ciò che appartiene alla vita - a partire da quanto è considerato più alto e immateriale: amore, religione, politica, poesia - sia la rinascita, nel suo animo a lungo quasi muto, di una forza dolce, di un rinnovato desiderio di cantare, benché resti la consapevolezza che futile è la speranza. Nel suo commento a «Il risorgimento», Valeri - al tempo giovane poeta e professore di liceo -, restituisce i principali passaggi del percorso umano ed estetico di Leopardi, dimostrando una profonda vicinanza al cuore insieme afflitto eppure ancora capace di improvvisa gioia del recanatese. Di idee fermamente socialiste, durante gli anni del fascismo Valeri ebbe un ruolo centrale negli ambienti antifascisti veneziani. Costretto, dopo l'8 settembre 1943, all'esilio in Svizzera, trascorse lì diversi mesi fino al termine della guerra in compagnia di altri importanti esuli italiani come Amintore Fanfani, Nelo e Dino Risi, Giorgio Strehler. L'opera «Taccuino svizzero» del 1946 sarà dedicata a quell'esperienza. in 8°, brossura celeste con titoli in nero al piatto, pp. 24. Prima edizione. Ottimo esemplare.
