Odd-even sort is a relatively simple sorting algorithm. It is a comparison sort based on bubble sort with which it shares many characteristics. It functions by comparing all (odd, even)-indexed pairs of adjacent elements in the list and, if a pair is in the wrong order (the first is larger than the second) the elements are switched. The next step repeats this for (even, odd)-indexed pairs (of adjacent elements). Then it alternates between (odd, even) and (even, odd) steps until the list is sorted. It can be thought of as using parallel processors, each using bubblesort but starting at different points in the list (all odd indices for the first step). This sorting algorithm is only marginally more difficult than bubble sort to implement.…

Cocktail sortalso known as bidirectional bubble sort, cocktail shaker sort, shakersort (which can also refer to a variant of selection sort), ripple sortshuffle sort, shuttle sort or happy hour sort, is a variation of bubblesort that is both a stable sorting algorithm and a comparison sort. Thealgorithm differs from bubble sort in that it sorts in both directionson each pass through the list. This sorting algorithm is only marginallymore difficult to implement than bubble sort, and solves the problemwith so-called turtles in bubble sort. …

It works by repeatedly stepping through thelist to be sorted, comparing each pair of adjacent items and swappingthem if they are in the wrong order. The pass through the list isrepeated until no swaps are needed, which indicates that the list issorted. The algorithm gets its name from the way smaller elements'bubble' to the top of the list. Because it only uses comparisons tooperate on elements, it is a comparison sort.…

Comb sort is arelatively simplistic sorting algorithm originally designed byWlodzimierz Dobosiewicz in 1980. Later it was rediscovered andpopularized by Stephen Lacey and Richard Box with a Byte Magazinearticle published in April 1991. Comb sort improves on bubble sort, andrivals algorithms like Quicksort. The basic idea is to eliminateturtles, or small values near the end of the list, since in a bubblesort these slow the sorting down tremendously. In bubble sort, when anytwo elements are compared, they always have a gap of 1. The basic ideaof comb sort is that the gap can be much more than one.…

The only requirement is that the operator obeytwo of the properties of a total order: if a ¿ b and b ¿ c then a ¿ c(transitivity), for all a and b, either a ¿ b or b ¿ a (totalness ortrichotomy). It is possible that both a ¿ b and b ¿ a; in this caseeither may come first in the sorted list. In a stable sort, the inputorder determines the sorted order in this case. A metaphor for thinkingabout comparison sorts is that you have a set of unlabelled weights anda balance scale. The goal is to line up the weights in order by theirweight without any information except that obtained by placing twoweights on the scale and seeing which one is heavier (or if they weighthe same).…

It is much less efficient onlarge lists than more advanced algorithms such as quicksort, heapsortor merge sort. However, insertion sort provides several advantages:simple implementation, efficient for (quite) small data sets, adaptivei.e. efficient for data sets that are already substantially sorted: thetime complexity is O(n + d), where d is the number of inversions, moreefficient in practice than most other simple quadratic (i.e. O(n2))algorithms such as selection sort or bubble sort: the average runningtime is n2/4[citation needed], and the running time is linear in thebest case, stable, i.e. does not change the relative order of elementswith equal keys, in-place, i.e. only requires a constant amount O(1) ofadditional memory space, online, i.e. can sort a list as it receives it.Most humans when sorting-ordering a deck of cards, for example-use amethod that is similar to insertion sort.…
