It was an event attended by le tout Washington and raised money for the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. The emcee was columnist Mark Shields, and others reportedly at the party included Ben Bradlee, Mike Wallace, and various members of the Kennedy family. Buchwald's friendship with Rowland and Kay Evans flourished over forty years; Kay Evans obviously also attended at this birthday party and gave generously to Buchwald's cause celebre. Arthur Buchwald (1925 â" 2007) was an American humorist best known for his column in The Washington Post. At the height of his popularity, it was published nationwide as a syndicated column in more than 500 newspapers. His column focused on political satire and commentary. Buchwald had first started writing as a paid journalist in Paris after World War II where he wrote a column on restaurants and nightclubs, "Paris After Dark", for the Paris Herald Tribune. He was part of a large American expatriate community in those years. After his return to the United States in 1962, he continued to publish his columns and books for the rest of his life. He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 for Outstanding Commentary, and in 1991 was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, in addition to other awards. In the early 1960's Art Buchwald worked in an office across the hall from the office in which Evans and Novak worked to produced their daily column -- each for newspaper syndication. Evans and Novak prided themselves on their resolution to include "breaking" news in each of their "Inside Report" columns. Consequently, their work often involved furious typing right down to the last minute representing an absolute deadline for filing their column for the day. Buchwald reportedly took great delight in torturing one or both of his neighbors who were facing their deadline, as usual, whereas Buchwald would saunter across the hall to Evans and Novak's lair, waving a typed page or two constituting one of his humorous columns, proclaiming that he was now ten days ahead of schedule. "How are you fellows doing?" PROVENANCE: Rowland Evans was a provocative newspaper columnist, commentator and author who antagonized liberal politicians and championed conservative causes. He left Yale and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 during World War II and was discharged in 1944 because of malaria. In 1963, Mr. Evans and Mr. Novak began writing ''Inside Report,'' an insider's view of politics that was published four times a week until Mr. Evans retired in 1993. Mr. Evans and Robert Novak began their work as columnists in the early 1960's, a time when newspaper columnists wielded outsize influence in national politics. The pair pioneered in transferring that influence to the medium of cable television with the political discussion program ''Evans & Novak'' -- carried on CNN from that cable network's beginning. Rowland Evans and his wife Kay (Katherine Winton Evans), also a respected writer and editor, were mainstays on the Washington social scene, hosting many memorable gatherings in their handsome Georgetown house -- to which flocked influential and remarkable people drawn from journalism, politics and general society over the decades from the 1960s to the 2000s. Both Evans and Novak became more predictably conservative over the years, particularly during the Reagan years. Reportedly, both columnists voted for JFK in 1960 and for Lyndon Johnson in 1964.
