A late 19th century British ambassador's travel account of Argentina and Uruguay. The author visited the province of Buenos Aires, the north-east, and the former Jesuit missions in Uruguay up to the Brazilian border. Printed by "La Tribuna". Folded into quarters. Tanned and foxed with a little loss at the intersection and folds. The bearer is Valentin Rico with some of his details written in by hand (Patria: B. Aires; Edad 38 anos; Estado: Casado; Profesion: Albanil). This passport, hand signed by the Chief of Police of the State of Buenos Aires, authorises him to travel to Montevideo: "Por cuanto ha concedido permiso a [ Valentin Rico ] para que pueda pasar libremente a [ Montevideo ] por tanto ordena las autoridades civiles y militares de su dependencia, y a los que no lo son encarga que no le pongan impedimento en su viage, sin justa causa. Al efecto se le ha expedido el presente Pasaporte, que solo tendra valor por un mes contado desde su fecha. Por autorizacion Superior, El Gefe de Policia [ Signature ]". The State of Buenos Aires (Estado de Buenos Ayres) was a short-lived secessionist republic that came about after the overthrow of the Argentine Confederation government in the Province of Buenos Aires on 11 September 1852. Daily Mail 22 Feb 1926: "From our own correspondent /Buenos Aires, Friday/ The Brazilian widow of the late Mr. Marcus Woodbine Parish, who was murdered in Misiones Territory, Argentina, last May, attempted suicide by taking corrosive sublimate yesterday./ The woman was awaiting trial on a charge of instigating her lover to commit the crime. The prison doctor saved her life with difficulty./Mr. Parish, who was the grandson of Sir Woodbine Parish, Minister at Buenos Aires 100 years ago and signatory of the first treaty between Great Britain and Argentina, was shot dead from a wood while motoring to his estate".
