Add to basketFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "16 December 1959, for Joy & Evelyn, Edward Gorey", with his printed name struck through. This is one of only 600 copies of the first edition, issued as a Christmas keepsake. It is rare inscribed by the author. The recipients were the journalists Evelyn Irons (1900-2000) and Joy McSweeney (1885-1988). Irons was an early lover of the author Vita Sackville-West, who wrote her many poems, but Irons broke off the relationship to be with McSweeney. Irons began her career as a journalist with the Daily Mail, where she was promptly fired for being unfashionable. She went on to become the first female war correspondent decorated with the French Croix de Guerre and was reportedly the first woman journalist to reach Hitler's Eagle's Nest after its capture, where she stole a bottle of his wine. Toledano A5b. Small octavo. Colour line-drawing illustrations by Gorey throughout. Original wire-stitched white wrappers, titles and publishers imprint in black on front and rear covers with illustrations of bugs by Gorey in red, yellow, and blue. Wrappers soiled and a little creased, one slight extending through text block: a very good example of a fragile publication.
