Red "Paid" and "5" rate handstamps with circular red stamp dated Jan 4 Chicago Ill. On front cover. Robert Stuart (1785-1848), the recipient of this letter, was born in Scotland. He first emigrated to Canada, then the United States. As a fur trader, he traveled widely and was on the first expedition to cross the South Pass in 1811. Stuart worked for Astor's fur company and was a partner in the firm. In 1845 he became the first Secretary of the Illinois and Michigan Canal Co., a position he held until his death in October 1848. His son, David Stuart (1816-1868), was a lawyer, politician and commander during the Civil War. What makes this letter intriguing is that it was sent to David Stuart's father by the J.H. Burch banking firm. The head of the bank was Isaac Howe Burch, who in 1859 accused his wife, Mary Weld Turner Burch, a society darling of having an affair with David Stuart (the recipient's son). The Burch Divorce Case, as it was known, had the entire country spellbound just prior to the start of war. "Chicago Jany 23 1847 R. Stuart Esq Dear Sir, Not having rec'd draft from you by this evening's southern mail in return for $4,500 sent you by Mr. Sears on Thursday last, we fear it may have miscarried. 'Tis possible you have sent it by Mr. Sears (should it be that he returns today), and if so, probably he will hand it in at a late hour tonight. Yours Truly, J. H. Burch & Co.".
Paperback. Condition: Fair. 116 pages ; 23 cm. Softcover. Portrait of Mrs. Burch on front wrap. Rear wrap missing. Tear to front wrap with loss. Pages clean, unmarked. In 1860 banker Isaac Burch sued his wife, Mary Burch on grounds of adultery. Mary responded that her husband had engaged in extreme cruelties, and had extorted a false confession from her. In the end the jury felt in favor of Mary Burch. She successfully sued her husband for divorce in 1863.
