London, The Royal Society, 1855-1858. Two papers in one. Large 4to (30.0 x 23.1 cm). 74 [34; 40 pp.]; three [3; 0] text figures; five [1; 4] engraved plates. Later blind wrappers. = An important contribution to the Holocene geology and sedimentation of Egypt as already noticed by Charles Darwin. Darwin was reviewer of the second part, and in a letter to the secretary of the Royal Society, dated 19 March 1855, recommended the work for publication: "I am of the opinion that Mr Horner's account of the researches made in the alluvial deposits of Aegypt, should be printed in the Philosophical Transactions, as the means of permanently recording valuable observations, and which observations probably will become in future times of still higher value". (Darwin correspondence project letter 1650). In this work, Horner presented much information on the river Nile and its deposits, calculating the number of years it took to form the river delta. The plates show sections of borings, a rather new feature in geology. Wrappers somewhat creased and the lower edges a bit chipped, internally a very good, clean copy.
