First Edition
22.5x15 cm, pp. [1-3] 4-50, 1 map (folded), original orange wrappers printed in black, sewn. Sixth edition. A 50-page pamphlet promoting the resources of Northern California, packed with articles and statistics from various authoritative sources, including a report on immigration by Charles S. Capp dated 9 December 1870 sent to Edward Young, Chief of the Bureau of Statistics, U.S. Treasury Department; a long report on "Our Wheat" published in the ALTA, 23 September 1872; wages paid by industry in San Francisco and vicinity; a review of Nordhoff's California by Robert Bentley; and much more (emphasis on agriculture in the Sacramento Valley region). The California Immigrant Union was founded in 1869 to promote emigration to California from the Eastern United States and from Europe. The first edition of the Union's brochure was published in 1870 (and did not have a map). William H. Martin was the General Agent for the California Immigrant Union which received support (including financing?) from the railroads, including the Central Pacific Railway and the Union Pacific Railway, and others. The folded map of California, "Britton and Rey's Reduced Map of the State of California . With Additions Showing the Railroad System of California," 33.3 x 40.6 cm (13.1 x 16 inches) is based upon George H. Goddard's map of 1858. This updated version shows the entire state as well as almost all of Nevada and parts of Oregon and Idaho. The map shows existing railroads, proposed railroads, topography, drainage, settlements, ranchos, and more. Howes C36. Not in Cowan (1933; 1964). Not in Rocq (1970). Tiny archival paper tape mends at inside front fore-edge corners, a very good copy. All these brochures are now uncommon in the trade. (#167375).
