Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Charles Edward Hooper (illustrator). This is a 12th printing (1906) by Grosset & Dunlap--authorized reprint through MacMillan from the original printing in 1903. This copy is signed by Jack London on the title page--dated 1912 and "Glen Ellen, Calif". This copy is also signed twice by noted author and hypnotist "From Dick Sutphen with "Defiance Oct 13, 1906" (on the half title page) and again on the Chapter I heading "Into The Primitive". It is not known why the date of 1906 was used by Sutphen--that date is before Jack London signed this copy--unless it has some kind of past life reference by Sutphen--In addition there is also a signature on the same Chapter I title page of Vin Moore--Vin Moore was an American film director, actor, and writer- who directed 83 films between 1915 and 1938. Although Sutphen wasn't born until 1937--he was connected to Jack London through London's novel "The Star Rover" which dealt with self-hypnosis and reincarnation. Sutphen wrote a new epilogue for the 1987 reprint edition of London's "The Star Rover" and claimed to have had a past life connection to the character Ed Morrell. Sutphen wrote the bestseller "You Were Born Again To Be Together"--and wrote 21 books for Simon & Schuster as well as appearing on many TV shows. This may have been Dick Sutphen's personal copy--although not known when purchased at auction. This copy is in "Good" condition--tight and unmarked interior with moderate toning to the green cloth--especially to the spine where the letters are mostly unreadable and the front panel where the depiction of John Thornton and Buck is, unfortunately, very hard to visualize. Add to basketHardback. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG- DW. Not dated but about 1935. Editor's Note "This novel has recently been beautifully filmed - a United Artists picture with Clark Gable as Jack Thornton and Loretta Young as Claire Blake". The painted image on the DW signed KELL also states UNITED ARTISTS. It features (presumably) Jack and Claire with a dog on a mountain. Difficult to say whether the images are intended to represent Gable and Young. Book is in very good plus condition with very minor signs of wear and/or age. DW is more or less entire but is a bit edge worn and slightly dusty.
