Er mußte 1859 mit seiner Familie die Toskana verlassen, erhielt eine juristische Ausbildung und widmete sich daneben seinen naturwissenschaftlichen und nautischen Interessen. Später nahm er seinen Wohnsitz auf Mallorca und unternahm mit der eigenen Yacht ausgedehnte Reisen im Mittelmeerraum, deren wissenschaftlichen Ertrag er in zahlreichen, teils selbstillustrierten Werken veröffentlichte. Ludwig Salvator führte umfangreiche Korrespondenzen, u. a. mit Theodore Roosevelt d. Ä. und Jules Verne, der ihm mit der Titelfigur seines Romans Mathias Sandorf ein literarisches Denkmal setzte.
