In computerscience, capability-based addressing is a scheme used by some computersto control access to memory. Under a capability-based addressing schemepointers are replaced by protected objects (called capabilities) thatcan only be created through the use of privileged instructions which mayonly be executed by the kernel (or some other privileged processauthorised to do so). This effectively allows the kernel to controlwhich processes may access which objects in memory without the need touse separate address spaces and therefore requiring a context switchwhen an access occurs. This allows an efficient implementation ofcapability-based security.
