Inner hinges are perfect. Pages are unmarked. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Bound in the original gray cloth, lettered/decorated with shiny gold over two bright blue panels on the spine. The colorful Dust Jacket features a full wrap-around world map that traces the route of Magellan's voyage from Spain, across the Atlantic Ocean, around the tip of South America and into the Pacific. Translated by Don Jose Alberich Sotomayor. Illustrated with endpaper maps, and numerous portraits and plates on glossy paper. "Impreso en España, 1955" stated on copyright page. Inscribed by the author and signed in full on the half title page: "To Walter Howe from Charles McKew Parr." [Walter Howe was US Ambassador to Chile from 1958-61. He also served in the Connecticut State House of Representatives (1935-1941) and as Director, US Mission to Columbia (1954-56), Agency for International Development]. This is a translation into Spanish of Parr's excellent biography of the Portuguese maritime explorer Ferdinand Magellan. After being turned down by King Manuel of Portugal, Magellan convinced King Charles I of Spain to sponsor his voyage across the Pacific Ocean to the Spice Islands of Indonesia. The voyage began in 1519 with well over 200 men and a fleet of five ships. Although Magellan did not live to see the end three years later, his expedition discovered what we now call the Straits of Magellan and completed the first circumnavigation of the globe. He was the first man to cross the Pacific Ocean sailing westward from Europe to Asia. Magellan was also the first European to visit the Philippine Islands. .
