Frontespizio stampato in rosso e nero con una grande vignetta centrale, disegnata da Francesco Bartolozzi, raffigurante un porco incorniciato entro un elegante ed armonioso cartiglio barocco. Il nome dell' autore, Giuseppe Ferrari, si ricava da c. A4(v). Prefazione "Ai saggi, e dotti Amadori della poetica novità" dell' illuminista modenese D. Carlo Antonio Giardini. Dedicatoria all' "insigne per zelo e per virtù" Giambattista Araldi, già consigliere del Duca Francesco III d' Este e del figlio Ercole III. Capolettera e fregi in xilografia. Ex libris di Rouvier de Vaulgran. Superbo esemplare su carta pesante a pieni margini ed ancora completamente in barbe, in eccellente stato di conservazione. Prima raffinata edizione di questa colto ed elegante componimento dell' abate Giuseppe Ferrari, illuminista amico di Goldoni, Arcade ed Accademico Ducale di Modena, così da lui elogiata "Vanta il tuo cotichin, Modena mia, del Popol di Quirin Colonia Antica?". Centrale nell' opera, un inno solenne "che paga il suo debito all' Accademia Della Crusca", è il tema del riscatto del porco "Onor de la quadrupede Famiglia" dalla condizione di oppressione, di servitù, di sottovalutazione nella quale giaceva, . Una difesa dell'animale sul piano storico, artistico, culturale, poetico e della mitologia religiosa. L' autore si scaglia contro tutti gli ignoranti preconcetti di cui l' Ancien Regime da sempre circondava immeritatamente il nobile animale: "Stia fermo! Porco!", "Maiale!", "Lei è un Porco!", senza il quale però i passaggi fondamentali della storia umana sarebbero mancati. Questo costume di sottovalutare il maiale, tanto onesto e rispettoso, ad atteggiamenti ufficialmente deprecati, gli parve sommamente ingiusto. Infatti per il Ferrari permane l' intuizione di come fra il porco, che si ciba ai suoi piedi e la quercia, che incorona gli eroi, dovesse pur esserci una qualche nobile corrispondenza. The preface is signed by a member of the Accademia dei Dissonanti, Carlo Antonio Giardini. At the end is a letter by Carlo Innocenzo Frugoni, followed by Ferrari's answer.Giuseppe Ferrari, an abbot from Castelvetro, was a member of the Ducal Academy of the Dissonants of Modena under the name Tigrinto Bistonio. In his poem ?In Praise of the Pig', he sought to rehabilitate the much-maligned pig. In the poem, he attempts to remove the layers of legend, rumour and gossip that have always plagued the unfortunate, tasty animal.?V'imbatterete subito in un delizioso poemetto che, più o meno e con stile assai più concettoso e minuettabile del nostro, scrisse nel Settecento l'Abate Giuseppe Ferrari da Castelvetro: ?Gli elogi del Porco'. Erano tempi, quelli, di Dotte Accademie e, non esistendo ?Il Rischiatutto?, si passava la serata leggendo quel che c'era. Nel caso dell'Abate, che si celava sotto il nome pomposo di ?Tigrinto Bistonio', Accademico Ducale de' Dissonanti di Modena, assistiamo ad una deliziosa arringa defensionale, in versi, del ?povero maiale'. Anche l'Abate, nel Settecento, avverte dunque l'esigenza di ?riabilitare' (oggi gli intellettuali parlerebbero di ?recupero'), di rivalutare insomma il diffamatissimo, oltraggiatissimo porco. Lo lava (o tenta di lavarlo: già non è facile oggi, lavare un porco, figuriamoci nel XVIII secolo, senza i biodegradabili) da quelle incrostazioni di leggende, di sussurri, di pettegolezzi che, maledizione (basta con ?porca miseria!' che, fra l'altro, è un nuovo controsenso. . .) l'hanno da sempre perseguitato? Curiosa e rara prima edizione di questi lepidi capitoli berneschi in cui l'autore, originario di Castelvetro di Modena, mosse una serie di lodi paradossali tendenti al riscatto sociale del bistrattato suino (e, ovviamente, un elogio dei prodotti freschi e insaccati derivanti dalla sua macellazione). Eccezionale esemplare, Ğristampa con variantiğ su carta azzurra, nonché copia autografa firmata in fine, ricca di correzioni del conte Luigi Sanvitale di Fontanellato che pubblicava sotto pseudonimo X. Y. Z. (cfr. Gazzetta di Parma 1844 n.44, p. 136). Sanvitale, politico risorgimentale molto vicino a Maria Luigia di Parma e Piacenza, amico di molti letterati pubblicò in particolare l'opera Versi e prose (ed. Gamba, Venezia 1841) e si adoperò poi per la pubblicazione delle poesie del cugino Jacopo Sanvitale (Prato 1875). Ottimo esemplare. (NF1).
