Book is protected with an archival clear Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper. _____CONDITION: Fine ("as new") condition._____DISCUSSION: Elfriede Abbe has fallen off of the radar screen of most modern private press collectors. Although she printed and published only eight major books, they are of exceptional quality with handset letterpress printing on fine handmade papers illustrated with her own wood-engravings printed directly from the wooden blocks, and beautiful marbled papers for bindings and clamshell boxes. She did all of the design and production, including binding, herself. The City of Carcassonne is arguably her finest work, taking the detailed historical notes and diagrams from Viollet-le-Duc's careful architectural restoration of Carcassonne's medieval citadel, La Cité, in 1853 and finally printing them in a durable format. This book is akin to time travel back to Carcassonne's early medieval origin in the 5th and 6th centuries with later additions from the 12th through the 14th centuries. Carcassonne is famous for its iconic double stone ramparts, 52 towers and the historic Château Comtal.
