"Faces of Character" is a Typeface Catalogue from the Leicester Co-Operative Printing Society, Circa 1935. The Society was located at Church Gate, Leicester, England. Copies of this Catalog are rare. This seems to be the only one of this catalogue for sale on line. The following is excerpted from material held by the 'National Co-operative Archive', catalogued by Nicola Hilton, University of Liverpool: "The Leicester Co-operative Printing Society was formed on 23 July 1892. The creation of a printing co-operative was initially considered by a Joint Committee made up of representative from the Leicester Co-operative Society and from the Trade Union Council. At their first meeting on 23 January 1892, the Joint Committee decided to formulate a scheme for starting a co-operative printing society. The Society continued to grow and in 1901 a purpose built property was erected at 99 Church Gate. In 1913, negotiations were undertaken to acquire more land on Church Gate to further expand the premises. In 1940, the Society was still operating from Church Gate. TITLE : Faces of Character ( a Specimen Book, or Catalogue of Typefaces used by the Co-operative) AUTHOR : Not given PLACE : Church Gate, Leicester, England DATE : No date given [But circa 1935] EDITION : Not given [Likely a later state of the First Edition] STATUS : Out of Print - OP DETAILS : The catalog is bound in a 'Fabricoid' (or 'Leatherette') flexible material with metal studs and metal adjustment slides (which seem to be 'locked' into position). Title and manufacturer are lettered in white on the front cover. Size = 7 1/2" x 9 1/2"; leaves are stiff card stock paper, divided into sections by red leaves with apertures through which each section name appears; there are also red tabs attached to each red leaf on which more general categories are printed. The lettering and numbering on each leaf are printed in red and black. 100 pages (count includes the category separators.) TYPEFACES DISPLAYED : * Perpetua . Also known as Gothic Type, used throughout Western Europe, 12th through 17th Centuries RULES AND BORDERS CONDITION . VERY GOOD . This is a previously owned book, that remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR - Slight discoloration exhibits on both recto and verso of covers - this is subtle in nature, and the whole seems quite crisp, with bright lettering. There is no rusting to the metal studs, etc. INTERIOR - The surface of each leaf that faces the cover is foxed - a commonly enough effect seen on paper that rests against the manufactured material of the cover. Else the interior is clean and unmarked.

Known as the 25 from the year in which it was produced, this is the finest specimen book ever done by BBS. It was produced under the general direction of Richard N. McArthur (formerly of the Keystone Type Foundry) who commissioned outside designers such as Will Ransom, Oswald Cooper, Carl S. Junge, George F. Trenholme and Ethel G. Hoyle to create new type faces and ornaments. The highlight of the catalogue is the first showing of Munder Venezian and Munder Bold, named in honour of Norman Munder of Baltimore, Dean of Printers of America during the 1910-1930 period.
