Handsome and tight copy of the 35th anniversary edition of THE classic 1961 satirical war novel -- with front colophon noting limitation to 750 numbered copies (this #622) signed boldly by Heller in black ballpoint. BALABAN (born 1945, plays bomber pilot Captain Orr) signs in blue ballpoint, dated by him 25 March 1980 at upper right; AUSTIN PENDLETON (born 1940, plays Lt. Col. Moodus) signs in blue ballpoint, dated by him 3 March 1970 at upper right; and MARTIN SHEEN (born 1940, plays pilot 1st Lt. Dobbs) signs in blue fineline, dated by him 30 September 1969 at upper right. Laid in are the ideal bookmarks: Balaban, Pendleton and Sheen's original transmittal envelopes.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Simon and Schuster, New York. 1961. 443 pages. First edition, first printing. Signed and inscribed by Joseph Heller on the front endpaper, on October 11th, 1961, eight days before the book's official publication date, on October 19th, 1961. At that time, Joseph Heller was still working at McCall's magazine, and chose to include McCall's as a post-script, below his inscription and signature. This pre-publication copy would indicate this copy was likely from the author's own private stock of pre-publication copies. Additionally, Mr. Heller inscribed the book for his then boss at McCall's magazine. All of this information is provided by Joseph Heller, in a handwritten note, explaining this very pre-publication date inscription. This hand-written letter is laid in, along with its original mailing envelope, dated June 17, 1996, with a 117 postmark, indicating Suffolk County, Long Island, which is home to East Hampton, where Mr. Heller resided. As for the book, binding is tight. Hinges are strong and sound. Sunned red topstain. Original DJ with $5.95 price intact on flap. DJ is bright and attractive. One or two tiny edge chips. Red hue is bright on the front and on jacket spine. Light rubbing to jacket. One tiny instance of minor soiling, on DJ front. Endpapers are clean; front endpaper contains the lengthy inscription, from Mr. Heller. Blue cloth panels have been professionally cleaned. Cloth rubbed thin along some folds. A touch of professional restoration in front gutter, and to blue cloth, mostly on corner tips. There are nicer copies available, but few check so many boxes for one of the most important books in twentieth century literature. First edition, first printing, in bright original jacket, signed and inscribed by the author in a dated, prepublication association copy, with the inscription breakdown supplied by the author himself, some thirty-five years after the fact. A true plum. Rare. Signed by Author(s).

DL consignment. Shelved Room C. Joseph Heller was born May 1, 1923 on Coney Island, Brooklyn, NYC to poor Jewish immigrants from Russia. Heller had an early love for writing, writing a story about the Soviet invasion of Finland, which was rejected by the "New York Daily News". Heller would join the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, performing over 60 missions flying a B-25 bomber. After graduating with an M.A. in English, Heller would work several jobs, writing as he worked, eventually coming up with the lines that would birth "Catch-22" in 1953. "Catch-22" would be published in 1961, a satirical war novel based in part on Joseph Heller's personal experiences during World War II. After publication, "Catch-22" became big amongst younger circles who felt the novel encapsulated feelings about the Vietnam War. "Catch-22" remains a popular novel into the modern day, many noting it's seeming prescience about the chaos of the world to come. 1390120. Special Collections.

The book has been printed letterpress, including all the illustrations, on 100% cotton paper, and features marbled endpapers made to look like military camouflage. 'Set in Italy during World War II, this is the story of the incomparable, malingering bombardier, Yossarian, a hero who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. But his real problem is not the enemy-it is his own army, which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to excuse himself from the perilous missions he's assigned, he'll be in violation of Catch-22, a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule: a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but if he makes a formal request to be removed from duty, he is proven sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved.' 551 pages. 6.1 x 9.5 inches. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. SIGNED by Joseph Heller (1923 1999). Catch 22. [New York: Dell Publishing Co., 1973]. 8vo. Illustrated from photographs of the first play directed by Larry Arrick at the John Drew Theatre. Original publisher's pictorial wrappers. FIRST DELTA EDITION, SIGNED BY HELLER on half title. Joseph Heller's full-length comedy, adapted from his iconic first novel. The story is set in World War II and is peopled with a group of US Army Air Force men one in particular called Captain John Yossarian. The men do what they can in order to survive so they can go home to their families, but their rank superiors keep throwing obstacles in their paths to try and keep them longer. Catch-22 represents the idea of a "no-win" situation no decision or course of action a person makes or takes results in resolution, but rather in a continuation of the confusion one tried to clear up in the first place. The term itself has entered the language as a description of a ridiculously cyclical situation. A fine, tight copy, evidently unread. No writings, bookplates, or markings save for author's signature.
