These books are intended to serve as a 'literary cathedral tour' of different regions of France. 'Cathedrals of Southern France' contains a frontispiece of St. Andre de Bordeaux, a folding map of France, seventeen plates, and numerous other illustrations throughout. 'Cathedrals of Northern France' contains a frontispiece of Notre Dame de Noyon, a folding map of France, nineteen plates, and numerous other illustrations throughout. In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding. Externally, very smart with minor shelf wear. The binding on Southern France is slightly torn to the head of the spine, and slightly torn at the corners of the tail of the spine. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spines on both volumes. Mackenzie Edward Charles Walcott (18211880) was an English clergyman, known as an ecclesiologist and antiquarian. Always at work on antiquarian and ecclesiological subjects, he was elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London on 10 January 1861. This book contains a lovely frontispiece depicting the cathedrals of Wells, Winchester, York, Lincoln, and Salisbury. This copy contains the signature of a previous owner on the front pastedown: 'Herbert Druitt, Christchurch, May 23, 1924'. In the original cloth binding. Externally, binding is faded and shelf wear is present. Joint is starting on the upper front board, but boards remain firm. Cloth has faded on the spine and extremities. Previous owner's signature is present on the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages generally clean throughout with the odd spot. Good Only. book.
