Warhol, Andy (illustrator). Signed boldly by Andy Warhol on the front flyleaf in black marker, "Andy Warhol." Quarto. Publisher's original stiff card covers; illustrated with thirteen black-and-white and twenty color images, including three full-page fold-out plates with thumbnail index. A rare signed copy of the Italian exhibition catalogue for Warhol: Il Cenacolo, the final exhibition mounted during the artist's lifetime. Essays by Luisa Cogliati Arano and Carlo Bertelli situate the series in relation to Leonardo da Vinci's mural and the broader history of religious imagery. Scarce in any condition and particularly uncommon signed, this desirable copy marks a late, unexpectedly spiritual turn in Warhol's career. It was owned by a close art-world colleague and signed at the exhibition's opening in Milan. Commissioned in 1984 by Alexandre Iolas, the Last Supper series draws on Leonardo's Il Cenacolo (1495-1498), reworked through mass-produced reproductions. Across more than one hundred variations?screenprints, paintings, and sculptural works?Warhol layered Christ and the apostles with logos and graphic devices, merging religious imagery with his language of repetition and consumer culture. The exhibition opened in January 1987 at the Galleria del Refettorio delle Stelline, opposite Santa Maria delle Grazie. This proximity sharpened the dialogue between original and reproduction. With just twenty works selected, the installation reads as both homage and postmodern reinterpretation of Renaissance spirituality. Now considered a key statement of Warhol's late work, the series foregrounds themes of faith, mortality, and transcendence. Warhol died unexpectedly on February 22, 1987, one month after the opening, recasting the exhibition as an unintended memorial and final chapter in his engagement with religious subject matter.
