SIGNED and inscribed to the front free endpaper: "With every good wish for Xmas 1905 | André Simon 21 Dec 1905" and below Simon has written the name of the recipient ("A.S. Gardiner Esq"). This is André Simon s first book, the beginning of a long and illustrious career writing about wine. In his 1969 book "In the Twilight" [pp 7-8], Simon recounts how he met A.S. Gardiner, then editor of the Wine Trade Review, in 1903, and how Gardiner encouraged him to write about wine and commissioned twelve articles, to be published monthly, about champagne. These twelve articles, published in Wine Trade Review through 1904, form the basis of this book, the first of over 100 books written and published by André Simon. Importantly, and perhaps uniquely, this copy of 'History of the Champagne Trade in England' was inscribed by Simon to A.S. Gardiner, the man who launched his writing career. In Very Good condition, binding tight and square, light browning to the endpapers only, otherwise clean inside, some fading to the cloth on the spine and the bottom 2 cm of the upper board. A special copy. Inscribed by Author(s).
