Softcover. Condition: Good. 1st one-volume printing(?). [typical age-toning and edgewear for French books of this era and genre, spine a little more brown than the rest with a couple of cracks and a small triangular chip at the base; many leaves are unopened at the upper edge]. SIGNED by the author on the half-title page (dated 1924 or 1925), beneath a brief inscription (in French) to "Baron Harmo de Schricking [sp?]." A "novel of love," about a young Frenchwoman's visit to the Big Apple, by this Russian-born novelist and poet (and sometime screenwriter) (1876-1958), who worked in the theatre in Paris prior to World War I, and after the war divided his time between France and the U.S. Between 1927 and 1932 he worked in Hollywood under the auspices of the French Embassy, where he "monitored the 'French-atmosphere productions made in Hollywood [and] worked to erase the 'anti-French' aspects of certain American productions and was entrusted with the mission of finding actors to play French roles." (Translated from French Wikipedia.) He also supplied reports on the American film industry to the French Embassy in Washington. This is a variant-title edition of his book "New-York" (sans "Cher"); according to the list of his works that accompanies his entry in French Wikipedia, "New-York" was published serially in four parts in La Petite Illustration in 1922 and later issued in book form by Calmann-Lévy in 1926; OCLC has numerous entries under both titles. On the rear cover is a list of the publisher's other works, and at the bottom of the page is a statement of printing which includes "3-23," which I am taking to mean March 1923; because the original serial publication was in October-November 1922, I am surmising that this edition would have been the first printing as a single volume. (I will be glad to accept a correction from anyone better-versed in French bibliography.) I do not read enough French to be very informative about the book's content, but judging from the illustrations (by André Castaigne) that accompanied the original serial publication -- which I examined online in the Harvard library's digitized copy, but which are NOT present in this edition -- the French lady's touristic activities included visting the Lower East Side and taking in the atmosphere of an opium den. The serial edition of this work appears to be quite common, but a signed copy, not so much. Signed by Author.
