Mario Chichorro, figure reconnue dans le milieu de l'art brut, à l'âge de 90 ans, à Thuir, dans les Pyrénées-Orientales, où il résidait. Cet artiste dont le travail était reconnu par Jean Dubuffet en personne, le fondateur de l'art brut, et, plus près de lui, par le catalan Claude Massé, était né au Portugal en 1932, et avait étudié l'architecture aux Beaux-Arts de Porto. Mais il avait ensuite fuit son pays dirigé par des militaires pour arriver en France en 1963 où il s'installe à Perpignan, embauché par un architecte. En 1968, il choisit de se consacrer à la peinture et passera le reste de sa vie à peindre, dessiner ou sculpter, essentiellement des visages, notamment avec son matériau favori, le polystyrène.
