Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Volumes I & III ONLY of IV. SPECIAL COPY: SIGNED LETTER BY THE AUTHOR bound in within introductory pages. Volume I has 23 additional plates; number of portraits and table of contents for each one are handwritten from the period within the introductory pages. Volume I also has a paste-down of the newspaper's death notice of Walter Wilson, with date written below in ink. Volume III has many additional plates and also contains handwritten notes from the period. Hardcover, bound in light brown leather with gilt bordering the covers. Raised bands with dark brown labels stamped in gilt lettering and decoration on the spine. Both volumes are in similar, "very good" condition, showing wear to both covers with some leather peeling away. Dark staining or possible speckling is found on all edges of both volumes, and could possibly be mold-stain. Pages are unevenly toned and foxed throughout both volumes with some dampstain, yet binding is tight and text is legible with no marginalia, noteable creasing or tears. Illustrations have offset consistently throughout, yet engravings are beautiful. Bookplate on both front paste-downs for "C Godwyn", circa mid to late 1800's. Inner hinges show cracks on both volumes, yet are attached. Cover of Volume III is starting at top hinge down to about the middle, yet remains attached. A page has been torn right before the Contents on Volume III.From the preface: "The attainment of truth is the only legitimate end of history. If destitute of this ingredient, it may delude mankind, but cannot instruct them; it may serve the interest of a party, but strikes at the foundation of religion and virtue. To arrive at truth, we must divest ourselves of sectarian prejudices, weigh well the opinions of others, and be dissident of our own judgement. True wisdom is always allied to modesty; and whilst it becomes us to be decided in our own opinions, a recollection of human fallibility will teach us a lesson on candor to others. As there is hardly any thing more destructive to the peace of society, so there is nothing more contemptible than bigotry. History is full of its evil consequences, and we heartily despise those narrow minds in which it was an inhabitant. In denouncing this disturber of the christian world, truth makes no distinction of sects. The mind of an Edwards was no less deformed than that of a Wood, and whilst we use their facts, we reject their opinions, and pity their bigotry. A difference of opinion as to rites and ceremonies, and forms of worship, has been the source of endless divisions amongst Christians. But all the schisms that have taken place in the church would have been as harmless as the picture drawn of them by the frightful mind of a non-juror, if Christians had cultivated the spirit of their religion, and aimed at a greater likeness to the temper of its founder." Volume I: xviii, 536 pp. Article from "Evangelical Magazine, 1862" inserted between the Preface and the Contents.; Volume III: page torn out directly before Contents. 572 pp. Full refund if not satisfied.
