Cairo is the capital of Egypt and the city-state Cairo Governorate, and is the country's largest city, home to 10 million people. It is also part of the largest urban agglomeration in Africa, the Arab world and the Middle East: The Greater Cairo metropolitan area, with a population of 21.9 million, is the 12th-largest in the world by population. Cairo is associated with ancient Egypt, as the Giza pyramid complex and the ancient cities of Memphis and Heliopolis are located in its geographical area. Located near the Nile Delta, the city first developed as Fustat, a settlement founded after the Muslim conquest of Egypt in 640 next to an existing ancient Roman fortress, Babylon. Under the Fatimid dynasty a new city, al-Q hirah, was founded nearby in 969. It later superseded Fustat as the main urban centre during the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods (12th-16th centuries). Cairo has long been a centre of the region's political and cultural life, and is titled "the city of a thousand minarets" for its preponderance of Islamic architecture. Cairo's historic center was awarded World Heritage Site status in 1979.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. Format is approximately 4.875 b7 6.25 inches. x, [2], 211, [1] pages. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Includes a Preface by Vladimir Nabokov and selections from: Bertolt Brecht, Marie Vassiltchikov, Alfred Doblin, Thomas Pynchon, Franz Kafka, Marcellus Schiffer, Bennett Owen, Lillian Helman, Karl Badeker, Christopher Isherwood, Josephine Baker, Rainer Maria Rilke, E. T. A. Hoffmann, and Christa Wolf. In one pocket-sized volume, Berlin collects the best fiction and nonfiction about the city from an array of writers of international stature. From chanteuse Josephine Baker on her second adopted home to playwright Bertolt Brecht on the decline of the Weimar Republic, and including an excerpt from Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, a resident's 1989 account of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and a description of Berlin from the 1912 edition of a Baedeker guide (written by Karl Baedeker himself), Berlin is an engaging literary stroll through a remarkable city. Authors like Franz Kakfa, Lillian Hellman or Vladimir Nabokov, between other great ones, show us their feelings and impressions of a city that has been part of so many important moments in world history.
