Three-quarter Leather. Condition: Very Good. Robert Cruikshank (illustrator). First Edition. Stout 8vo. Pp. xii, 640. Illustrated with 39 plates by Robert Cruikshank. Later three-quarter green morocco over marbled boards. Gilt lettering stamped on spine, gilt ruled and ornaments in compartments, with five raised bands. Marbled edges. Inscribed twice by the author at pages 225 and 257. This account of the Bastille is charmingly illustrated by (Isaac) Robert Cruikshank (1789-1856), brother of George, and represents one of his last works. The tale, which was widely believed to have been "merely" translated from the French, is in fact an independent text by Chamerovzow, who published several works in English. Although subtitled "First Series," no further volumes were issued. A handsome, well-bound copy. Not in SADLEIR, or in WOLFF, who cites the sequels The Embassy (1846) and Philip of Lutetia (1848).
