Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A fine medieval epic poem from SpainOne of the finest of epic poems, and the only one to have survived from medieval Spain, The Poem of the Cid recounts the adventures of the warlord and nobleman Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar - 'Mio Cid'. A forceful combination of heroic fiction and historical fact, the tale seethes with the restless, adventurous spirit of Castille, telling of the Cid's unjust banishment from the court of King Alfonso, his victorious campaigns in Valencia, and the crowning of his daughters as queens of Aragon and Navarre - the high point of his career as a warmonger. An epic that sings of universal human values, this is one of the greatest of all works of Spanish literature. A poem that details the adventures of the warlord and nobleman Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar - 'Mio Cid'. It tells of the Cid's unjust banishment from the court of King Alfonso, his victorious campaigns in Valencia, and the crowning of his daughters as queens of Aragon and Navarre - the high point of his career as a warmonger. At home equally in the emergent feudal kingdoms of northern Spain and the exotic principalities of the Moorish south, Rodrigo Diaz was an adventurous soldier of genius who, following his own fortunes, sold his skills to Christian and Muslim alike. Like all European aristocrat~soldiers of his time, he was always his own man, ever suspicious of established royal authority; throughout a remarkable career, he racked up an impressive series of military victories and amassed vast fortunes; by the end of his life (he died in 1099), he had become the independent ruler of Valencia, a principality he defended from repeated bloody attacks by Islamic fundamentalists who had invaded Spain from their Moroccan homeland~and he was the most famous man in Iberia. El Cid became the centerpiece of countless legends, of the great epic Poema de Mio Cid and of Corneille's splendid tragedy. Richard Fletcher's fascinating inquiry into the life and times of El Cid draws us into the real excitement of historical research, as the author separates fact from myth and involves us in the quest for the truth about this extraordinary hero. The Quest for El Cid is a journey of discovery into the turbulent dark history of an epoch when for the first time Christian and Muslim, European and Arab, met and clashed. Fletcher's account of a confrontation that helped to form modern Europe is a masterly accomplishment.

Soft Cover. Condition: Near Fine. McBride, Angus (illustrator). First Edition. First edition. Minor general wear. 1988 Soft Cover. 47 pp. The very name El Cid sums up much of the special character of medieval Spanish warfare. It comes from the Arabic al sayyid, master or chieftain, and seems to have been given to Rodrigo de Vivar by his Muslim foes. But was it given in recognition of El Cid's victories against Islam in the 'Reconquista' ? or because this Castilian nobleman was as content to serve beside the Muslims as to fight them' The story of the Christian conquest of the Iberian peninsula which gave rise to the legend of El Cid, is here examined by David Nicolle, who outlines the history, tactics, arms and armour of the period.
