Alison Cooper was born in Libya and studied at Newport College of Art and Florence University. A love of gardening and plants in general led her to take up painting full time after her children went to school. She has since exhibited at the Royal Horticultural Society and won many medals, the most recent being a Silver Gilt for a collection of Dianthus. She has also exhibited widely throughout Britain including the Tryon and Swann Gallery, Malcom Innes' Gallery, the SBA and at Kew in London, and at other exhibitions in Birmingham with the RBSA and at the Botanical Gardens. Her work is represented in the Dr Shirley Sherwood collection of Contemporary Botanical Artists, and photographs are held in the Bridgeman Art Library in London. She has also produced many postcards and cards with designs of flowers, fruit and vegetables. Ab 1926 in der kunstgewerblichen Abteilung der Vereinigten Technischen Schulen in Zwickau, wo sein Talent von dem Maler Hans Christoph entdeckt wird. 1928 Studium an der Kunstgewerbeakademie Dresden bei Carl Rade. 1931 Unterricht bei Ferdinand Dorsch und Max Feldbauer, ab 1932 dessen Meisterschüler. 1933-39 freischaffend, zusätzlich tätig als Korsettzuschneider. 1933 muss er die Akademie aus politischen Grünen verlassen. 1934 Beginn der Künstlerfreundschaft mit Carl Lohse. 1936 Heirat mit Gussy Hippold Ahnert. 1939-45 als Soldat in englischer Kriegsgefangenschaft. Danach wieder freischaffend in Radebeul. 1949 übernahmen Gussy und Erhard Hippold die Miederwarenwerkstatt ihres Vaters im Haus Sorgenfrei im Stadtteil Oberlößnitz. This work enjoyed particular success, at least in part due to the novelty of the plates, which in a radical departure from the iconography of the traditional florilegium, presented its plant species against a charming series of landscape backgrounds The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality.Artists and Engravers: Abraham Munting (Dutch, 1626-1683) was professor of botany at the University of Groningen and considerably enlarged the botanical garden his father Henricus Munting had founded. It was known as the 'Paradise of Groningen' and became one of the most extensive gardens of the period. During the summer Munting gave botanical lectures to his students. It was in this beautiful garden that his daughter Hester died eating deadly nightshade. This work portrays plants growing in Munting's garden. His numerous botanical friends had sent the seeds of many of these plants to him from the Dutch East- and West Indies, Africa and the Americas. Munting wrote a number of works on medical-botanical topics. Engraver unknown, although one of the plates is signed Joseph Mulder (1659-1710). Condition: Excellent. General age related toning.
