Fig. 63 : 'Clematis Americana - Flore Phoeniceo.' (American Clematis, Binonia, Trumpet vine.) Handcoloured etching/engraving on a verge type handlaid paper. The colouring is modern. Description: This plate originates from: ''Naauwkeurige Beschryving der Aardgewassen, Waar in de veelerley Aart en bijzondere Eigenschappen der Boomen, Heesters, Kruyden, Bloemen, Met haare Vrugten, Zaden, Wortelen en Bollen, Neevens derzelver waare Voort-Teeling, gelukkige Aanwinning, en heylzaame Genees-Krachten, Na een veel-jarige Oeffening en eigen Ondervinding, In drei onderscheide Boeken, naauwkeuriglijk beschreeven worden; Door den Heer.', by A. Munting, published by Pieter vander Aa and Francois Halma Utrecht and Leiden, 1696. This work enjoyed particular success, at least in part due to the novelty of the plates, which in a radical departure from the iconography of the traditional florilegium, presented its plant species against a charming series of landscape backgrounds The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality.Artists and Engravers: Abraham Munting (Dutch, 1626-1683) was professor of botany at the University of Groningen and considerably enlarged the botanical garden his father Henricus Munting had founded. It was known as the 'Paradise of Groningen' and became one of the most extensive gardens of the period. During the summer Munting gave botanical lectures to his students. It was in this beautiful garden that his daughter Hester died eating deadly nightshade. This work portrays plants growing in Munting's garden. His numerous botanical friends had sent the seeds of many of these plants to him from the Dutch East- and West Indies, Africa and the Americas. Munting wrote a number of works on medical-botanical topics. Engraver unknown, although one of the plates is signed Joseph Mulder (1659-1710). Condition: Excellent. General age related toning. Narrow right margin remargined for ease of handling. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: AV-A1-28 The overall size is ca. 9.4 x 15 inch. The image size is ca. 8.1 x 12.2 inch. The overall size is ca. 24 x 38 cm. The image size is ca. 20.5 x 31 cm.
