This is a retrospective study of the work of painter Cleve Gray (born 1918) who began his artistic career in the late-1940s and 50s when Abstract Expressionism was appearing through the New York art scene. This book combines biography and critical analysis, based on interviews with Gray and visits to his studio. Works by Gray throughout his career are featured, including full-page views of "Threnody", the multipanel painting Gray created as a response to the Vietnam War for the Neuberger Museum at the State University of New York at Purchase. Photographs show the artist as a young man, with his wife Francine du Plessix Gray, and at work. ISBN 0810941384.

Add to basketFirst edition of the book Duchamp considered a necessary part of his audience's interpretation of his artwork The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even, widely referred to as The Large Glass. Duchamp stopped working on the piece in 1923, after eight years, not because it was complete, but because he decided it should remain "definitively unfinished." Later, in 1927, when the glass was en route to collector Katherine Dreier's house from an exhibition in Brooklyn, he was thrilled to discover that it had been damaged, saying the accidental cracking finished the work in a way that he never could have. Tall quarto. With diagrams and facsimile notes throughout. Original white cloth boards, lettering to spine and front cover in red. With original illustrated acetate jacket. Book near fine, chips to acetate on head of front panel and head of spine, closed tear and fold to front flap and small split to foot of spine. Overall, a very good copy.
