Publisher's original navy blue cloth over boards, gilt lettering to spine, gilt decoration to upper cover. Book Condition: spine ends pushed with cloth chipped in places, shelf wear to covers, gilt lettering to spine dulled, though always legible; elaborate gilt decoration on upper cover much brighter and commanding our attention. Text block and plates unmarked and unmarred. Very good+ at least. Two letters from A. E. Verrill himself tipped-in, just before the ffep, the first dated March 9, 1903 apologizes for the delay in shipping the brand new first edition due to heavy demand for copies, there is also the last minute addition of a matched volume brought out more or less simultaneously, entitled "Zoology of the Bermuda Islands Vol. 1" and consisting of the large amount of scientific study which the author possessed to a degree unmatched. The second letter comes only one day later and continues the general tenor of the first letter, that is to say it is easy to imagine this customer as no match for Mr. A. E. Verrill's skills as a salesman. Both letters approximately to easily 600-700 words. Signed.
