Combined are Slick/Haliburton's The Clockmaker, Third Series (Paris: Baudry's European Library, 1841; [i]-vi, 199pp.), The Old Judge (NY: Stringer & Townsend, 1849; [1]-114pp., [6 publisher's ads]), and Lady Scot…t's Hylton House (NY: H. Long & Brother, 1850; [1]-115pp., [5 publisher's ads]). Likely reprinted from their respective publisher's plates, as paper is uniform throughout, but print style is not. The Clockmaker title page states it includes "The Letter-Bag of the Great Western" however this does not appear to have been included. Navy half-leather and marbled boards binding, gilt titling on spine, red speckling to page block edges; moderate amount of wear, rubbing to edges and corners, rubbing to marbled paper as well; binding remains firm and fully intact; previous owner names inscribed in pencil on title pages (apparently different owners for each book), else text is free of markings. A nice little group for the collector of 19th century humor. Photos, further explanation available upon request. Ships same or next business day from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Sam Slick is a character created in 1835 by Thomas Chandler Haliburton, a Nova Scotian judge and author. With his wry wit and Yankee… voice, Sam Slick of Slicksville put forward his views on "human nature" in a regular column in the Novascotian. The twenty-one sketches were published in a collection titled The Clockmaker, or the Sayings and Doings of Samuel Slick of Slicksville . The First Series was published in 1836, supplemented by an additional 12 unpublished or new sketches. The book was Canada's first international bestseller and was hugely popular, not only in Nova Scotia but also in Britain and the United States. Slick s wise-cracking commentary on the colonial life of Nova Scotia and relations with the U.S. and Britain struck a note with readers, leading to a second series in 1838 and a third in 1840. The satirical sketches, mocking both Canadians and Americans, made Haliburton one of the most popular writers of comic fiction in English of that era. The Clockmaker (which was also translated into German) established Haliburton as one of the founders of North American humour. As Arthur Scobie notes in The Canadian Encyclopedia, The Clockmaker stories "proved immensely popular and, ironically, have influenced American humour as much as Canadian." Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles on a black label, 5 raised gilt edged bands dividing 6 compartments, 5 of which have gilt decorations, gently worn top and tail. Joints good condition gently rubbed. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition half leather/marbled boards with blind tooled lines separating, the front boards has some marks down the left hand side on the leather and the leather corners are also worn, the rear board has minor damage to the marbling and the leather corners are also worn. Thomas Chandler Haliburton, 1796 1865, was one of the first major Canadian authors. He attended University of King's College in Windsor and became a lawyer, opening a practice in Annapolis Royal. Haliburton became noted local business man and a judge, but his great fame came from his writing. He wrote a diverse number of books on history, politics, and farm improvement. He rose to worldwide fame with his Clockmaker serial that first appeared in the Novascotian. From 1826 to 1829, Haliburton represented Annapolis County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. Haliburton retired from law and moved to England in 1856. In 1859, Haliburton was elected the Member of Parliament for Launceston, Cornwall. Haliburton received an honorary degree from Oxford for service to literature and continued writing until his death. In cloth binding. Externally, rubbing, with mild wear to the extremities, including mild bumping, discolouration, and some ink marks. The rear hinge of volume II has failed. The front hinge of volume 3 has failed, and the rear hinge is starting. Internally, binding is loose in places with some of the pages coming away. Pages of volumes I and III are bright with occasional spotting, whilst volume II has slight browning and occasional spotting. Good Only. Various (illustrator). book.
