The author begins his story with man's earliest timepiec, a stick stuck in the ground to cast a shawod, and traces its history and evolution through sundials and waterclocks, hour glasses and measured candles to the mechanical clock as we know it. He deals with domestic clocks from the end of the 14th century to the present day and with chronometers, Japanese clocks and monumental clocks. Famous clockmakers, both European and American, and the patronage by Royalty of clockmakers all over Europe, are described in some detail. The 136 illustrations include old prints of clockmakers and diagrams of clock mechanizms; and among the color photos are beautiful French and Italin clocks of the 17th and 18th centuries. T. Fraser would have been your man. Here's the second best thing, not really, you can own a book about clocks (which have a little something to… do with time) that was once owned by Dr. Fraser. I purchased a number of books some years ago that had been his. This book has his bookplate on the inside front cover. The chapter headings are Early Time-Keepers, Early Domestic Clocks, Domestic Clocks 1500-1700, French Domestic Clocks 1700-1800, European Domestic Clocks 1700-1800, Domestic Clocks 1700-1961, Time and Navigation, Japanese Clocks, and Monumental Clocks. The book is in quite decent condition. You can see the covers in the photos. There is some color fade at the margins of the front cover and some toning/darkening at the margins of the white rear covers. The edges and corners are in excellent condition. The inside covers and end papers form the same illustration. The book is solidly bound from cover to cover. The pages look quite clean. I'm scrolling through and not finding any soiling. I'm also not seeing any creasing. There is one page (both sides) with a little nick off the top edge, not reaching the print or the illustration. There are a great many illustrations throughout the book, more than there are pages (there are 128 of those, pages). The illustrations are in black and white and in color. They all appear to be in excellent condition. I don't see any markings on any the pages. There are no attachments other than Mr. Fraser's bookplate. He did underline, in red ink, four sentences on one page. There is no other underlining or writing of any kind to be found in the book. There is a cardboard slipcase. It is in solid condition. There's just a bit of rub-through on both sides of the spine ends. There's also the same color fading at the margins of the front of the slipcase and toning/darkening at the margins of the white rear of the slipcase. Julius Thomas Frazer who made 'important scholarly contributions to the interdisciplinary Study of Time' and whose 'work has strongly influenced thinking about the nature of time across the disciplines from physics to sociology, biology to comparative religion, and who was a seminal figure in the general interdisciplinary study of temporality.' Dr. Fraser was also a founding member of the International Society for the Study of Time. You can read a lot more about him in his Wikipedia profile. I purchased this book in Westport, Connecticut where Dr. Fraser lived.
