Gebunden. Condition: Sehr gut. Gebraucht - Sehr gut Ungelesenes, vollständiges Exemplar; in sehr gutem Zustand, leichte Lagerspuren, als Mängelexemplar gekennzeichnet -The Clyfford Still Museum was designed by the leading architectural practice Allied Works and its founder, Brad Cloepfil. The building creates space for the voice and artistic vision of American painter Clyfford Still (1904-1980), housing the vast majority of his creative output over a sixty-year period. The museum's design is inspired by the work of Still and by its monumental context: the site is located at the intersection of prairie and mountains, within an urban district of major cultural buildings, vacant lots, historic housing, and new development. The building looks to the earth as a source of silence and profound connection to the elemental forces the artist explored through his painting. This publication presents the vision and realization of the museum from initial concepts to completion. A rich collection of stories, artifacts, documents, and conversations trace the evolution of the building and Allied Works' unique creative process. New essays and photography examine its significance within contemporary architectural discourse and the singular experience of the completed work. 112 pp. Englisch.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Clyfford Still (1904-1980) is a pioneer of Abstract Expressionism, along with Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and Willem de Kooning. This revelatory book, accompanying a groundbreaking exhibition, investigates Clyfford Still s late work, both in painting and in drawing, made after his move to rural Maryland in 1961. This marks a particularly fertile period for Still; he made over 375 works on canvas and a staggering 1,100 works on paper in Maryland before his death in 1980 at the age of 75. Given Still s especially reclusive posture later in life and the fact that none of the artworks in Still s estate were exhibited or made available to anyone before the opening of the Clyfford Still Museum in 2011, a full-scale presentation of these forty paintings and thirty works on paper is especially meaningful. In addition to essays by Dean Sobel and David Anfam, the artists Alex Katz and Dorothea Rockburne contribute texts on the notion of late work. An exclusive look at the late work of one of the most influential and enigmatic painters, whose late-career paintings are virtually unknown to the public and many are published here for the first time. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This groundbreaking study investigates the close and paradoxical relationship of art and race during the Enlightenment. In this text, French art historian Anne Lafont examines the complexities and contradictions in Enlightenment-era ideas about race, focusing on the figurations of Africans and other people of color. Through studies of a wide range of eighteenth-century art, Lafont grounds her analysis in the objects themselves and, by doing so, highlights how visual works can reveal the values of the culture that produced them. While Lafont locatesunsurprisinglyinstances of the marginalization and objectification of Black people, she also draws attention to depictions that present African sitters as subjects in their own right. For example, Anne-Louis Girodet's Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Belley (1797) offers a dignified, individualized representation of this formerly enslaved French politician from Saint-Domingue; and portraits of anonymous sitters show them as actual persons whose costumes and poses demonstrate their agency. Ultimately, Lafont moves beyond artworks to consider the broader intellectual context of the Enlightenment, particularly ideas about freedom, equality, and universal human rights, which were anchored in visual culture and indexed by it. She reveals how these ideals often conflicted with the realities of colonialism and the shifting status of Black people during this era. This groundbreaking book provides the first detailed account of the materials and techniques of perhaps the most radical-and, until now, least studied-major American Abstract Expressionist.
