12mo. 119, [1] pp. Woodcut-engraved frontisp. Quarter-calf over blue-coloured publisher's boards (rebacked, gilt lettering on spine, minor wear to corners, inner hinges repaired), still a VG copy. Early Silas Andrus printing reproducing Ludlow's Code which were the Puritanic Blue Laws governing the early settlements in Connecticut after they he and his fellow settlers broke away from Massachusetts Bay Colony, and drafted the "Fundamental Orders of Connecticut" considered the first Constitution in America. Although circulated in manuscript form after 1672, and after 1702 printed copies were occasionally circulated, Andrus began in 1822 to print and distribute the Blue Laws in order to combat exaggerated claims of the Blue Laws content. These laws touched upon delinquency, cattle stealing, robbery, theft, contempt, and more, but also were quite strict in matters such as disrespecting, or defying parents over the age of 16 (penalty was death), blasphemy (death), manslaughter (death), same-sex sexual relations (death), witchcraft (death), but swearing, or smoking and chewing tobacco in public could be penalized by fines. Mahoney, The Long, Ambigusous History of Connecticut's Blue Laws, Connecticut History (2022); The Code of 1650 or Ludlow's Code, Tapping the Scales of Justice -- A Dose of Connecticut Legal History (2024).

This incredible 19th-century record of the Blue Laws of New Haven was a direct correlation to cases during the Salem Witch Trials. Note the frontispiece of a constable seizing a tobacco taker! The Blue Laws of the Colony of Connecticut, as distinct from the generic term "blue laws" that refers to any laws regulating activities on Sunday, were the initial statutes set up by the Gov. Theophilus Eaton with the assistance of the Rev. John Cotton in 1655 for the Colony of New Haven, now part of Connecticut. After the laws were approved, they were printed in London, England, in 1656 and distributed to households in New Haven. ***** FORN0756 HKVAR1223.
