Advance reading copy of the first edition of Follett's page-turning thriller. Octavo, original pictorial wrappers. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page,"To Ken + Erica - with love, Ken Follett." The recipients, American writer Erica Jong and lawyer Kenneth David Burrows were married in August of 1989. Erica Jong remains best known for her 1973 novel Fear of Flying which became famously controversial for its portrayal of female sexuality and figured prominently in the development of second-wave feminism. Written in the first person and narrated by its protagonist, 29-year-old American poet Isadora Wing, Fear of Flying was written in the throes of the Sexual Revolution of the 1970s and encapsulated the movementâs redefinition of female sexuality. In interviews, Jong stated: âAt the time I wrote Fear of Flying, there was not a book that said women are romantic, women are intellectual, women are sexualâ"and brought all those things together⦠What [Isadora is] looking for is how to be a whole human being, a body and a mind, and that is what women were newly aware they needed in 1973.â The novel remains a feminist classic and has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. In near fine condition. In America 1958, a man wakes up in a railway station public toilet with no recollection of his past. His clothing, associates and surroundings suggest to him that he is an alcoholic derelict, however his behaviour, intelligence, morals and instinct lead him to investigate and research his past. He establishes (by the simple method of going into a library and pulling books off shelves until he finds one that he understands) that he is in fact Dr Lucas - a rocket scientist, and well known in his field. He further establishes that he is directly responsible for the design of a rocket due to be launched by America in an attempt to match the Soviet Sputnik, and bolster America's entry into what would become the Space Race.
