In-4 (23 x 27,5 cm), reliure plein veau, dos lisse orné de dorures, tranches marbrées, gardes couleur, 1267 pages ; grandes épidermures sur le cuir, mors supérieur un peu fendu en tête, coins usés, par ailleurs intérieur frais, assez bon état général. Livraison a domicile (La Poste) ou en Mondial Relay sur simple demande.

Hardcover. Ninth edition. Pagination: [blank], [frontis.], [3], [Appendix, 8], 1-1904 (double-columned; two page numbers to a page). Index [94]. Thick 4to. Bound in vellum with yapped edges and a leather spine in compartments, and bears the copperplate engraved frontispiece of Schneidewein. The vellum shows wear and some soiling. It appears that the joints were at some time in the past repaired, with glue residue showing on boards. Spine leather chipped, and joints beginning to crack at spine ends. Front hinge neatly repaired. Contents tight, with some marginal wear to preliminary pages, else clean with only some very light foxing. Overall, a good+ copy of an important early legal and philosophical text. Johann Schneidewein (1519-1568) was a German jurist. At the age of eleven, he entered the University of Wittenberg and became acquainted with Martin Luther, when he was a boarder at his house in 1544. At first, Scheidewein studied what we would now describe as the 'liberal arts'. He then turned his attention to the study of law and was granted the degree of licentiate in 1545 (some accounts say 1544). For the next four years he taught and, in 1551, was granted a professorhip in law at the university. In the years prior to his death, he was often consulted on legal matters of state, and several times took part in deputations to the imperial court at Speyer. He died in Wittenberg in 1568, and his tomb at the Castle Church in that city is close to Luther's. His main work was his Commentaries on Justinian, which were edited by Matthias Wesenbeck and first published in 1573.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair - Good. 1st Edition. Title page + 437 pages. Condition; Hardback binding fair well rubbed edges and covers detached, looks like a later binding of c1700. Contents Fair to Very Good, no end pages, starts at Title page (looks 15th century), ends at last page that is dated for 5 December 1505. numerous old inscriptions to many pages, printed throughout in black & red ink with a couple of illustrations within text, with decorative initials/ chapter heads etc. clearly printed text, though title page has no spaces between most of the words of title. Some edge water staining to a few pages at front with edge loss, the cord holding text together is poor so text is spit into a few parts. A few edge nicks, one or two edge tears, some dirt to first/last page, some edge wear/dirt, no foxing, there is also one old sheet of paper with Latin notes on, that has been sewn in at the top of one printed page. Originally commissioned and altered/checked/revised on Roman Law by Emperor Justinian between 529-534 CE and known as Codex Justinianus, it was a complete revision of all Roman Law, much of which is still relevant and in use today. Justinian I, Emperor of the East, 483?-565. This work was first printed in France in 1470. So to sum up an early historically important printing of this title, dated to rear Mcccccv, v Decembus (Dec 5th 1505) in Fair condition, some poor, many in good & very good condition in need of rebinding, with lots of old Latin manuscript notes to many pages throughout, but with many pages good & very good without any notes.
