Contemporary full red leather, raised bands on spine, spine and covers richly gilt. "Collectanea": Small chip out of top of spine. Front joint cracked along top one inch. Corners of covers worn, especially corners of rear cover. Pages 463-470 stained in upper corner. Old, neat ink notes in margins of pp. 11, 12, 13, 59, and ink "X" in margins of 280, 281. Dated from the College, and Signed by Th. G. and R.M. Written in Behalf of the Apothecaries and Chirurgians of the City of London. "One of the little kings of proprietary medicine in the 1690s was William Salmon, 'Professor of Physick'. . . . Salmon was ready to take on all his critics. In the late 1690s, he rallied the apothecaries and other manufacturers of medicines to oppose an attempt by the Royal College of Physicians to establish control over the dispensing of drugs. Salmon excoriated 'the Pride, Covetousness, and Idleness of the Physicians' who sought to 'Monopolize all the Practise of Physick into their own hands' [quoted from "A Rebuke"]" (Paul Kléber Monod, Solomon's Secret Arts: The Occult in the Age of Enlightenment, p. 129). Quoting the Oxford DNB: "In 1699 Salmon joined in the controversy over the role of the Royal College of Physicians. The college leadership came under attack as it attempted to implement its own internal disciplinary actions against certain members, to prosecute impostors practising outside the bounds of the college, and to maintain control over the Society of Apothecaries through establishing a dispensary. Samuel Garth's The Dispensary: a Poem (1699) drew public attention to the dispute, while Salmon's Rebuke to the Authors of a Blew-Book, Call'd The State of Physick in London (1699) warned against the college's continuing monopolization of the profession. Salmon went on to publish Collectanea medica: the Country Physician (1703)." The physician and poet Samuel Garth, friend of Addison and Pope, was an adversary of William Salmon. "In 1697 he [Garth] delivered the Harveian Oration, in which he advocated a scheme dating from some ten years back for providing dispensaries for the relief of the sick poor, as a protection against the greed of the apothecaries. In 1699 he published a mock-heroic poem, The Dispensary, in six cantos, which had an instant success, passing through three editions within a year. In this, he ridiculed the apothecaries and their allies among the physicians" (Wikipedia). In The Dispensary, Garth refers to Salmon in Canto III, line 6: "Cowslips and Poppies o'er his Eyes he spread, And S__ nd's Works he laid beneath his Head. " In A Compleat Key to the Seventh Edition of the Dispensary (1714), p. 13, Garth's "S___nd's Works" is explained: "Salmon, a late Quack Doctor, and indefatigable Scribbler". Signed by Author(s).

An 1892 collection of reprints of rare and unique 17th and 18th century tracts relating to Northumberland, Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne edited by Robert Robinson. Includes pastoral poems, letters, histories, notices of Newcastle worthies and excerpts from books. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Brown paper covered boards in good condition embossed to edges in triplicate blind rule. Gilt lettering to front. Slight wear to corners and edges. 'Robinson - Collectanea Cvriosa' handwritten along spine which is bumped to top and bottom. End papers age toned otherwise unmarked. Front paste down contains owner's bookplate of Joseph Crawhall an English artist born in Morpeth associated with the Glasgow Boys. Front free end paper has pasted the publisher's original advertisement for the book. Engraved title page lightly spotted, verso to which reads '100 Copies printed'. Onlaid on p 3 is a handwritten letter from the editor Robert Robinson dated 1893 to Mr Crawhall. Mention is made of the drawings of another artist Robert Johnson also from the Newcastle upon Tyne area. Text block in good clean condition with some spotting to final leaves. 7 full page b/w engravings of Newcastle worthies each protected with original dust sheets. First Edition. Folio, 8pp, printed wraps. Inscribed by the composer. A very good copy. Villa-Lobos (b.1886) was a Brazilian violinist, conductor and composer. He composed a wide range of music which was performed in Brazil and the US. He is known, also for his book on Brazilian folk songs.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 50 Volume set complete. Apart from 3 of the books, all volumes are the deluxe 1/4 leather bound editions. These deluxe editions were produced in a very small run of 50 books all numbered. they each have raised bands on the spine and a green label with gold gilt. Vol 31 is a standard edition which has been beautifully bound in 1/4 leather (unfortunately not matching leather) Volumes 48 and 50 are the standard editions both housed in very good dust jackets. Vol 1 is nr 2/50 inscribed by J.B. Bowker who wrote the introduction of the book. Vol 2: is nr 3/50 inscribed by Ian Mackenzie who also wrote the introduction of this book. Most of the leather-bound books, have the neat bookplate of a previous owner. Vol 1 was published in 1962 and the final Vol 50 was published in 1975. Although each of the leather bound books are numbered between 1-50 they are not the same number throughout the run. The condition overall is very good to fine. there is some scuffing and minor age related marks. Complete sets of this series rarely come on to the market and even more so in the deluxe edition.
