Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Ex-library with the usual library markings (if not for the library markings this copy would be graded in fine condition); overall a nice used copy! Color illustrated boards with white lettering. 248 historical and informative pages nicely enhanced by black and white photographs and illust…rations! "While soldiers were off fighting on the fields of war, civilians on the home front fought their own daily struggles, sometimes removed from the violence but often enough from deep within the maelstrom of conflict. Chapters provide readers with an excellent, detailed description of how women, children, slaves, and Native Americans coped with privation and looming threat, and how they often used, or tried to use, periods of turmoil to their own advantage. While it is the soldiers who are often remembered for their strength, honor, and courage, it is the civilians who keep life going during wartime. This volume presents the lives of these brave citizens during the early colonial era, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. This volume begins with Armstrong Starkey's detailed description of wartime life during the American Colonial era, beginning with the Jamestown, VA settlement of 1607. Among his discussions of civilian lives during the Pequot War, King Philip's War, and the Seven Years' War, Starkey also examines Native American attitudes regarding war, Puritan lives, and Salem witchcraft and its connection to war. Wayne E. Lee continues with his chapter on the American Revolution, investigating how difficult it was for civilians to choose sides, including a telling look at soldier recruitment strategies. He also surveys how inflation and shortages adversely affected civilians, in addition to disease, women's roles, slaves, and Native Americans as civilians. Richard V. Barbuto discusses the War of 1812, taking a close look at life on the ever-expanding frontier, rural homes and families, and jobs and education in city life. Gregory S. Hospodor observes American life during the Mexican War, examining how that conflict amplified domestic tensions caused by sharply divided but closely-held beliefs about national expansion and slavery. Continuing, James Marten looks at southern life in the South during the Civil War, examining the constant burden of supporting Confederate armies or coping with invading northern ones. Paul A. Cimbala concludes this volume with a look at northerner's lives during the Civil War, offering an outstanding essay on a home front mobilized for a titanic struggle, and how the war, no matter how remote, became omnipresent in daily life.".

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. [Personal copy of renowned historian, Philip D. Morgan (Editor).] Hardcover and dust jacket. Good binding and cover. Shelf wear. Jacket sunned. Clean, unmarked pages. Morgan authored the essay, "Slave Life in Piedmont Virginia 1720-1800" featured in this volume. "This volume demons…trates that the renaissance in Chesapeake studies that began a decade and a half ago is still vigorously proceeding. The essays address questions of immigration, the local economy, Indian and Afro-American life, family, and community, and combine detailed investigation with a broad comparative and synthetic outlook." - Paul G. E. Clemens, Rutgers University From the professional library of Dr. Philip D. Morgan, a professor of History at Johns Hopkins University. Morgan specializes in the African-American experience, the history of slavery, the early Caribbean, and the study of the early Atlantic world. Morgan is the author of more than 14 books on Colonial America and African American history. He has won both the Bancroft Prize and the Frederick Douglass Prize for his book Slave Counterpoint: Black Culture in the Eighteenth-Century Chesapeake and Lowcountry (1998).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition, Special Edition. SPECIAL EDITION, FIRST THUS, first printing, beautifully bound in publisher's deluxe half-leather with marbled boards, matching marbled endpapers, and bright gilt top edge. Spine with raised bands and bright gilt titling, well preserved. Binding is sound a…nd tight. Exterior shows very light rubbing. Interior clean, unmarked, and crisp. Frontispiece: halftone portrait of Plato from the classical marble bust, with intact printed tissue guard. This volume contains four of Plato's most celebrated dialogues: Apology, Crito, Phaedo, and Protagoras, translated by Benjamin Jowett, with introductory material by Jowett and Maurice Francis Egan, Ph.D. A refined example from Colonial Press's World's Great Classics series, known for its high production quality and elegant bindings. Collector's Note: This Colonial Press edition (1899) represents one of the most attractive American fine-binding presentations of Plato's works from the turn of the century. Produced for private libraries and serious readers, the World's Great Classics series was issued in an elevated format featuring half-leather bindings, marbled papers, gilt edges, and protected frontispieces—far superior to the cloth trade editions of the period. Jowett's translation remains one of the foundational English renderings of Plato, and these Colonial Press printings are valued today for both their scholarly importance and their craftsmanship. A strong, handsome example suitable for collectors of classical philosophy, fine bindings, and 19th-century American press books. Additional images gladly provided upon request. Volume will be professionally wrapped, securely boxed; international shipping available. [Attributes: Special Edition; First Thus; Half Leather; Marbled Boards; Gilt Top Edge; Illustrated; Frontispiece; Deluxe Binding] 327 pp.

First edition, describing the Royal Navy's ruthless 1849 campaign against China's most notorious swashbucklers, who harassed British shipping from bases near Hong Kong and extorted protection money from foreign traders. This work is scarce in commerce and held by the National Maritime Museum only in the UK. "In the mid-nineteent…h century, as war and rebellion weakened the Chinese state, piracy waxed again. The opening of Hong Kong and the treaty ports offered fresh opportunities. 'No matter what they want, whether to buy, sell, victual, or refit, here they are welcome; no papers are asked or given', said the China Mail" (Munn, p. 76). The 1849 anti-piracy campaign, the largest of its kind, saw the destruction of 23 of Chui-Apoo's ships and 400 of his men, while Shap-Ng-Tsai was ambushed off Hainan, losing almost 60 vessels and 1,700 crew. Finally captured in Canton in 1851, Chui was taken to Hong Kong, tried, and hanged. "These displays of British naval power pleased merchants in Hong Kong, who feted officers with dinners and presents of silver plate. But the wholesale massacres that accompanied them made no distinction between pirates and their hostages, among whom were women and children. Official rewards paid in head money for each pirate killed or captured caused controversy. Those for the campaign against Shap-ng-tsai totalled £42,425, shared among 363 officers and men. Politicians in London were appalled by the staggering cost and the slaughter of so many people" (Munn, p. 77). The author served on HMS Columbine as purser and paymaster and dedicated this compilation to Captain (later Admiral) John C. Dalrymple Hay, the leader of the campaign and a future Fourth Naval Lord. Cordier 1901; not in Hill, Löwendahl, or Lust. Christopher Munn, Penalties of Empire: Capital Trials in Hong Kong, 2025. Octavo. Original blue morocco-grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt and stamped in blind, covers blocked in blind, yellow coated endpapers, binder's ticket (Josiah Westley) on rear pastdown. Old Probsthain bookseller's ticket on front pastedown; contemporary gift inscription on half-title. Soiling and rubbing to cloth, inner hinges starting, front free endpaper lacking: very good.
