Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Ex-library with the usual library markings (if not for the library markings this copy would be graded in fine condition); overall a nice used copy! Color illustrated boards with white lettering. 248 historical and informative pages nicely enhanced by black and white photographs and illustrations! "While soldiers were off fighting on the fields of war, civilians on the home front fought their own daily struggles, sometimes removed from the violence but often enough from deep within the maelstrom of conflict. Chapters provide readers with an excellent, detailed description of how women, children, slaves, and Native Americans coped with privation and looming threat, and how they often used, or tried to use, periods of turmoil to their own advantage. While it is the soldiers who are often remembered for their strength, honor, and courage, it is the civilians who keep life going during wartime. This volume presents the lives of these brave citizens during the early colonial era, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. This volume begins with Armstrong Starkey's detailed description of wartime life during the American Colonial era, beginning with the Jamestown, VA settlement of 1607. Among his discussions of civilian lives during the Pequot War, King Philip's War, and the Seven Years' War, Starkey also examines Native American attitudes regarding war, Puritan lives, and Salem witchcraft and its connection to war. Wayne E. Lee continues with his chapter on the American Revolution, investigating how difficult it was for civilians to choose sides, including a telling look at soldier recruitment strategies. He also surveys how inflation and shortages adversely affected civilians, in addition to disease, women's roles, slaves, and Native Americans as civilians. Richard V. Barbuto discusses the War of 1812, taking a close look at life on the ever-expanding frontier, rural homes and families, and jobs and education in city life. Gregory S. Hospodor observes American life during the Mexican War, examining how that conflict amplified domestic tensions caused by sharply divided but closely-held beliefs about national expansion and slavery. Continuing, James Marten looks at southern life in the South during the Civil War, examining the constant burden of supporting Confederate armies or coping with invading northern ones. Paul A. Cimbala concludes this volume with a look at northerner's lives during the Civil War, offering an outstanding essay on a home front mobilized for a titanic struggle, and how the war, no matter how remote, became omnipresent in daily life.".

E. Clemens, Rutgers University From the professional library of Dr. Philip D. Morgan, a professor of History at Johns Hopkins University. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Photogravures produced by Anderson Lamb Co. (illustrator). 1st Edition. Here is "The American Spirit in Education" by Edwin E. Slosson, as issued in the "Chronicles of America Series" (No. 33), and published by Yale University Press. This is the 1921 First Edition, bound in the series' ornate cloth binding. The dark gray of the cloth is embellished with gilt and white design. The series was edited by Allen Johnson. This copy still has the original dust-jacket , which has ensured that the book is in lovely condition - bright, clean and attractive, and remains mostly unopened (ie: the leaves have not been separated. It was in the 19th century that deeper American attention to pedagogy was established. This was in large part because of Horace Mann, who tackled the cause of education in a matter not seen before. Other educators are covered in this book, such as Elihu Yale, James Bowdoin, De Witt Clinton, James Smithson, Justin S. Morrill, Henry Barnard, Ezra Cornell, Matthew Vassar and others. As well as individuals there are a number of schools of higher education that were created early in the history of our nation, and these are discussed: colleges such as Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Bowdoin, William and Mary College, Columbia College, Van Renssalaer Polytechnical Institute and Emma Willard's Seminary in Troy NY, to name just a few. Published in 1918, the book does not follow the progress of education through the twentieth century and beyond, but for the two centuries previous, starting with Colonial times, admirable in its coverage. Unfortunately sparse attention (practically none) is given to Black institutions of higher education; nor are Native Americans in the picture, except tangentially. SERIES : The Chronicles of America (vol. 33) SERIES EDITOR : Allen Johnson TITLE : The American Spirit in Education (Abraham Lincoln Edition) AUTHOR : Edwin E. The book has a Bibliographical Note and an Index; x + 30 pages; 5" x 8" ; smooth dark gray cloth covers the boards and spine; both the spine and the front board have lettering stamped in gilt; both the spine and front board have ornate decorative embellishment, with simple line borders. SPECIAL EDITION, FIRST THUS, first printing, beautifully bound in publisher's deluxe half-leather with marbled boards, matching marbled endpapers, and bright gilt top edge. Spine with raised bands and bright gilt titling, well preserved. Binding is sound and tight. Exterior shows very light rubbing. Interior clean, unmarked, and crisp. Frontispiece: halftone portrait of Plato from the classical marble bust, with intact printed tissue guard. This volume contains four of Plato's most celebrated dialogues: Apology, Crito, Phaedo, and Protagoras, translated by Benjamin Jowett, with introductory material by Jowett and Maurice Francis Egan, Ph.D. A refined example from Colonial Press's World's Great Classics series, known for its high production quality and elegant bindings. Collector's Note: This Colonial Press edition (1899) represents one of the most attractive American fine-binding presentations of Plato's works from the turn of the century. Produced for private libraries and serious readers, the World's Great Classics series was issued in an elevated format featuring half-leather bindings, marbled papers, gilt edges, and protected frontispieces?far superior to the cloth trade editions of the period. Jowett's translation remains one of the foundational English renderings of Plato, and these Colonial Press printings are valued today for both their scholarly importance and their craftsmanship. A strong, handsome example suitable for collectors of classical philosophy, fine bindings, and 19th-century American press books. Additional images gladly provided upon request. Volume will be professionally wrapped, securely boxed; international shipping available. Condition: Very Good. Clarence Cook (illustrator). FIRST EDITION (1901). Complete in two volumes. Handsomely bound in publisher's original quarter calf leather over marbled boards, with decorative gilt paneling and gilt lettering on spines. Marbled endpapers. Gilt top edges; deckled fore and bottom edges. Wide margins throughout. Numerous unopened pages, suggesting little to no handling since publication. Bindings remain tight and square. Light, expected shelf wear to spine crowns and joints, with one small chip at a spine crown. Interiors exceptionally crisp and bright. Pages clean and unmarked. Frontispieces retain their original captioned tissue guards. Profusely illustrated throughout with an impressive range of late-Victorian printing techniques, including chromolithographic facsimiles of 15th-century illuminated manuscripts, richly toned photogravures, and finely executed wood engravings (including work by C. A. Hellman). Plates remain vivid and undamaged, with tissue guards intact. Contents include works by Benjamin Franklin ("An Apology for Printers"), Duc de Sully, Prince de Talleyrand, the Earl of Clarendon, Lord Chesterfield, and other notable 17th-19th century statesmen and writers. A distinguished Colonial Press deluxe production, produced in relatively small numbers and seldom encountered in such well-preserved condition.
