Hardcover. Condition: Good. 3 volumes, 12mo (150 x 85mm). Vol. I: [xxxii], 229pp.; Vol. II: 283pp., [2]; Vol. III: 336pp. Engraved frontispiece of Frederic le Grand signed by "D. Berger 1798" in volume one and six engraved plates of narrative scenes of encounters between native Guineans and settlers, with captions in French, most plates signed. 18th-century mottled calf, gilt ruling, marbled endpapers; (some edgewear and rubbing, joints tender; label on 3rd volume lacking; still, a good set). Rare work by Texier, written in his perspective as a series of letters from "a French gentleman" to his friend; it contains a crude account of his travels and adventures on the coast of Guinea. In his letters, Texier finds one Adrian, a white man, ruling in conjunction with Zara, a black princess. When the French Revolution took place, Adrian was a rich planter on the island of St. Domingo and Zara was his favorite slave. Fearful of his property, he resolves to take shelter in Africa in the care of her father's property but encounters a series of nonsensical roadblocks. The narrative is one of a visionary hypothesis of codified law and legislation in the New World. Considered as a mere novel, there was nothing questionable about it - but Texier's contemporaries regarded the work as ridiculous. It was viewed as empirical in politics and well as in theology and medicine. It is rarely covered by any later reader or scholarship. Rare work about the races of the settlers of Guinea - described as "toutes couleurs" - by a rarer "empiric" author, Le Texier, working under the auspices of the French government.
