Vosslers Dantewerk ist bei aller Subjektivität durch die souveräne Beherrschung des Stoffes immer noch grundlegend, kann aber einen fortlaufend erklärenden Kommentar nicht ersetzen. Außerdem sind inzwischen auch in Deutschland eine Reihe von Arbeiten erschienen, welche die Danteforschung in verschiedener Richtung bereichert haben. Die Arbeiten von R. Palgen erbringen trotz der Überspannung seiner These wertvolles Material. E. Auerbach und H. Friedrich haben wesentlich zur Vertiefung der Dante-Deutung beigetragen. Vor allem hat E. R. Curtius durch seine Mittelalterforschungen gerade der Dante-Interpretation starke neue Anregungen gegeben. In Italien haben nach dem Meister der Dante-Forschung M. Barbi besonders G. Busnelli und B. Nardi einander gegenseitig ergänzend die philosophische Danteerklärung weitergeführt. Daneben haben die zahlreichen italienischen Dante-Kommentare, die laufend das gesicherte Erklärungsgut verarbeiten, immer wieder neue und persönliche Aspekte eröffnet; so haben u.a. L. Pietrobono die religiöse, M. Porena die kritische, Momigliano und Rossi-Frascino die ästhetische Interpretation wesentlich gefördert. In Frankreich bezeugt eine Reihe von umfangreichen Werken wie die von A. Renaudet, A. Pézard, Y. Batard und P. Renucci ein neuerwachtes Interesse für Dante. Auch in Nordamerika erscheinen immer wieder wertvolle Einzelforschungen zu Dante. So scheint der Zeitpunkt gekommen, einmal den Versuch einer Art kritischer Bestandsaufnahme zu machen. Dabei konnte naturgemäß keine Vollständigkeit der Literaturerfassung angestrebt werden, da eine solche über die Kraft eines Einzelnen gehen würde. Es konnte auch nicht die Aufgabe dieses Kommentars sein, neue Materialien, etwa historischer Art, beizubringen; wohl aber möchte er durch eine Zusammenstellung und Auswahl des Erforschten und manchmal in seiner Überfülle wieder Vergessenen einen neuen Anstoß geben zur weiteren Ergründung der geistesgeschichtlichen Zusammenhänge, der Klärung des enzyklopädischen Bestandes, sowie der Geschichte der Einzelmotive und der strukturellen Gesetzmäßigkeit des Danteschen Kosmos. Es konnte bei der unermeßlichen Fülle der Problemstellungen nicht ausbleiben, daß in diesem Kommentar einige derselben in den Vordergrund rücken. So wurde besonderer Nachdruck auf die Nachahmung, Wiederholung und Abwandlung bestimmter dichterischer Motive und Themen gelegt, weil sich dadurch oft wesentliche Durchblicke und eine bessere Einsicht in den großen organischen Zusammenhang, in die Architektonik des ganzen Werkes ergeben. So sind z. B. die Möglichkeiten der Entdeckung von zahlenmäßigen Symmetrien im Bau des Werkes noch lange nicht erschöpft. Im einzelnen wurden besonders die Parallelstellen aus den klassischen Autoren, aus Vulgata, Patristik, Scholastik und Mystik berücksichtigt, wobei durch die Frage nach den wirklichen Verbalreminiszenzen die Schaffensart Dantes deutlicher werden kann und die Anregung zu der noch fehlenden umfassenden Bildungsgeschichte des Dichters gegeben werden soll. Immer kam es darauf an, die Besonderheit Dantes in seinem Verhalten zu den Gegebenheiten, sei es literarischer, denkerischer, psychologischer oder historischer Art, zu charakterisieren und zu deuten, mit dem Endziel, die Bildungsgrundlagen und den Lebenshintergrund erstehen zu lassen, auf denen das Werk der Göttlichen Komödie zu begreifen ist, und wenigstens etwas von den Untertönen anklingen zu lassen, die für Dante und seine Leser mit dem Werke verbunden waren. In der Form schließt sich der Kommentar den üblichen italienischen Kommentaren an, jedoch mit dem Unterschied, daß er vom Text getrennt wurde und daß die zusammenfassenden Abschnitte über die einzelnen Gesänge und Episoden einen etwas breiteren Raum einnehmen. Er will damit einerseits die Möglichkeit geben, sich jederzeit über die größeren Zusammenhänge zu unterrichten und einen Gesamteindruck des Gesanges zu bekommen, wie andrerseits auf die Problematik jeder einzelnen Textstelle einzugehen. Durch häufige Verweise werden Wiederholungen vermieden, ohne daß darauf verzichtet wird, auch an Einzelstellen größere Ausblicke zu geben. Dank der Großzügigkeit des Verlages war es möglich, in sehr reichem Maße Texte zu zitieren, die dem Benützer die Meditation über die Textzusammenhänge wesentlich erleichtern werden und zum Weiterverfolgen der Probleme reizen mögen. Dem gleichen Zweck dienen die reichlichen, nicht vollständigen, aber oft absichtlich sehr ins Detail weisenden Literaturangaben. Eine gewisse Vollständigkeit wurde nur in der Erfassung der jeweils das Ganze eines Gesanges betreffenden Literatur angestrebt, die, obwohl oft von ungleichem wissenschaftlichem Wert, doch immer wieder die Erörterung der Einzelfragen in einen organischen Zusammenhang zu stellen bemüht ist. Wenn eine Endgültigkeit und Vollständigkeit der Erklärungen auch gar nicht im Bereiche des Möglichen lag, so wird es der Hauptzweck dieses Kommentars sein, den Leser nach besten Kräften über den Stand der Forschung zu unterrichten, ihn zu einem erneuten Durchdenken der Probleme anzuregen und damit die Danteforschung zu befruchten. Die Literaturangaben bekannterer Werke und Zeitschriften sind im ersten Bande bereits in Abkürzung gegeben. Am Ende des dritten Bandes soll ein Literaturverzeichnis folgen, sowie ein eingehendes Namen-, Sach- und Themenregister, das es ermöglicht, den Kommentar auch zum Nachschlagen zu benützen.
