FIRST EDITION. Half title, 8pp ads. Orig. brick brown cloth, front board dec. & lettered in black, spine lettered in gilt; sl. rubbed. Trollope Society Catalogue 41; Sadleir 35. A sl. later issue, advertising the next six titles following Caesar in the 'Ancient Classics for English Readers' series, edited by W. Lucas Collins. Tr…ollope describes the Commentaries as 'the beginning of modern history': Trollope insists firstly that the Roman world was far more relevant to (Victorian) political reality than the world of ancient Greece, and secondly that Britain's political elites could not understand their own identity and authority without acknowledging their relationship to Julius Caesar.

Contact seller5-star sellerThe Medici Society limited edition of this seminal firsthand account of Romeâs conquest of Gaul. Octavo, bound in full vellum with gilt titles to the spine and front panel, green silk ribbon ties, fully written in latin, and printed on handmade Riccardi Paper. One of 525 numbered paper copies, this is number 196. In near fine co…ndition. Revised text by T. Rice Holmes. An exceptional example. The Seven Commentaries on the Gallic War by Gaius Julius Caesar, with the Additional Commentary by Aulus Hirtius, is a cornerstone of classical historiography, providing a detailed, firsthand narrative of Romeâs conquest of Gaul between 58 and 50 BCE. Written in a concise and direct Latin style, Caesarâs account serves both as a military report and a work of political self-promotion, carefully shaping his image as a decisive and capable leader. The first seven books chronicle campaigns against various Gallic tribes, the Britons, and the Germans, blending strategic analysis with ethnographic description, while Hirtiusâs eighth book continues the narrative through the political unrest that followed Caesarâs departure. Together, they offer a unique fusion of military history, political rhetoric, and cultural observation, and remain an essential primary source for understanding the late Roman Republicâs expansionist policies.
