First edition thus. 8vo. Originally published in 1971. 8vo. Decorated wrappers, [4], 30 pp., frontis., foreword, map, bibliography. "In 1971 Jack D. Rittenhouse published his celebrated THE SANTA FE TRAIL, A HISTORICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY, to help commemorate the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Trail by William Becknell in 1821. "The focus on 'commerce and conquest' frames the trail not just as a trade route but also as a vector of cultural change, expansionism, and military movement." To place his bibliography in perspective, Rittenhouse included a concise and well-crafted introduction representing a summary history of the Trail. It is that introduction, with some added material, that is now being issued separately by the Santa Fe Trail Council, under the title, TRAIL OF COMMERCE AND CONQUEST". from the foreword by Marc Simmons. Fine copy.

Close attention is paid to the texts of the republican martyr Algernon Sidney (1623-1683) and the prominent Tory pamphleteer Charles Davenant (1656-1714). It is argued that the convergence of Machiavellian republicanism and mercantilism was a crucial intellectual precondition of England's rise to predominance in Europe. Text in English. 229 pp.

Part one of the work is a translation of Johann Ludwig Schult's Neue Nachrichten (Hamburg and Leipziz 1776) and other parts are similarly based on previously-published narratives and accounts principally German. Coxe went to Russian to verify the accounts with Gerhard Friedrich Muller and Peter Simon Pallas and other Russian experts on the expedition. Coxe succeeded in securing material, narrative and maps of Krenitzin and Levahser's secret expedition, the first official Russian expedition since Bering's second expedition of 1741. Frankfurt und Leipzig: Johann Georg Fleischer, 1783. Octavo (20 × 12 cm). Contemporary calf over five raised bands; gilt title and decoration to spine; IX, [4], 409, [4] pp. Complete with all four folded plates and one engraving. Binding rubbed; corners scuffed; front hinge starting; owner inscription "Wenc. Hadek" and later private bookplate; internally very good. First and only edition of the German translation of Coxe's famous account of Russian discoveries in Siberia, the Bering Strait and the North Pacific region, based on the English first edition (London, 1780). "It includes the main Russian discoveries and explorations made in northwestern America in their attempts to open communications with Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Coxe made suggestions which led the Russians to promote expeditions of discovery to the north parts of Siberia. His list of works on the subject, and his observations on the fur trade between the Russians and the Chinese, are very valuable" (Hill, p. 71). Coxe had travelled to St. Petersburg for his research, where he also consulted Gerhard F. Müller and P. S. Pallas. This copy contains all four folding maps, including a general map of the Russian Empire, charts of voyages by Krenitzin and Levasheff, Synd, Shalaurof, as well as the large folding plate depicting the town of Kiakhta, situated on the border between Russia and China, just south of Irkutsk and Lake Baikal. Sabin 17311. This German translation appears far scarcer than the first English editions.
