Blue cloth binding, gilt emblem to front board and gilt lettering to spine. A little marking and scuffing to binding but quite clean and colouring still vivid. Signs of wear, a little rubbing at edges. Binding firm. Page edges a little marked and browned but quite clean. Previous owner inscription to front free endpaper. Hasselquist était l'un des étudiants de Linné qui voyageaient outre-mer pour enquêter sur les plantes de régions inexplorées, en l'occurrence la Palestine, la Syrie, Chypre, Rhodes et Chios. L'auteur mourut à Smyrne en 1752, à l'âge de 30 ans, et son ouvrage fut publié à titre posthume par Linné qui le décrit comme étant plein d'observations fraîches, authentiques et précises : « Un journal de voyage aussi admirable n'a jamais paru auparavant. ». Sur proposition de Pontchartrain, Tournefort se vit ordonner par Louis XIV d'organiser un voyage au Levant et en Afrique. Accompagné par le dessinateur Aubriet et le médecin allemand Gundelsheimer, il avait pour mission de redécouvrir les plantes médicinales utilisées par les médecins de l'Antiquité, Hippocrate, Galien et Dioscorides. Ils quittèrent donc Paris en mars 1700 pour Candie et toutes les îles de l'Archipel, Constantinople, l'Arménie turque et persane, puis la Géorgie (dont c'est l'une des premières descriptions) et le Mont Ararat. Ils revinrent à Marseille en juin 1702 par l'Asie Mineure. Tournefort rapporta de ce voyage, outre des observations scientifiques, une foule de renseignements sur les murs et les coutumes des pays qu'il avait visités, leurs pratiques commerciales, leur histoire, etc. L'ouvrage est magnifiquement illustré de cent cinquante-deux planches gravées en taille douce d'après les dessins d'Aubriet. There are two issues of this work, one on 'papier fine' and one on 'ordinary' paper. This is one of the sets on ordinary paper. "The First Edition Is Rare.Tournefort was one of the greatest botanists of his time, discovering many new plant species during his travels in the Levant." [Blackmer]. The 152 engraved plates and maps (many folding) were drawn by Claude Aubriet, who participated in the expedition. // Tournefort was a professor of botany at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. He was sent to the Levant (countries in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea) by Louis XIV in 1700 to conduct botanical and zoological research. He was accompanied by doctor von Gundelsheimer and the artist Claude Aubriet. The outbreak of plague prevented him from exploring Egypt and Syria. This account of his travels 1700-1702, consisting of letters written to the Comte de Pontchartrain, Minister of Marine, who sponsored the mission, contains remarks on topography, maps, customs, costumes, antiquities, commerce, zoology, botany, and mineralogy. He traveled through the archipelago, visiting most of the islands of the Cyclades. He visited Crete before going to Constantinople and Turkey, covering the coasts of the Black Sea, continuing into Armenia, Mount Ararat, and Persia, Georgia, and returned by Asia Minor to Smyrna. "Tournefort was one of the greatest botanists of his time, discovering many new plant species during his travels in the Levant." The outstanding achievement of the expedition was the record of 1256 plants, many of which were previously unrecorded. // Tournefort (1656-1708), renowned French botanist. "After his school-days at a Jesuit college he studied theology at Aix, but in 1677 he turned his attention entirely to botany. He studied medicine at Montpellier and Barcelona. In 1683 he was made a professor and director at the Jardin des Plantes, Paris; he became later a member of the Academy (1692), a doctor of medicine (1698), and professor of medicine at the College de France (1702). Tournefort is recognized as a botanical explorer, and as the author of the artificial system of plants named after him. As a youth he travelled repeatedly through Western Europe, exploring particularly the region of the Pyrenees. In 1700-2 he visited the Orient, passing through Greece. The account of this journey, Relation d'un voyage du Levant (Paris, 1717), appeared after his death; his work is a classic and was translated into English (1741) and German (1776). Importées des Indes ou du Levant, les cotonnades de toiles peintes, ou indiennes, rencontrent un important succès en France au XVIIe siècle. Mais en 1686, Louvois promulgue une législation protectionniste : fabrication, commerc…e et même port de vêtements en toiles peintes sont strictement prohibés. Jusqu'en 1759, date de sa fin officielle, cette interdiction sera transgressée en permanence. Et notamment à partir de Marseille, où, se fondant sur la franchise du port, les commerçants sont exemptés de cette prohibition. La Provence devient un vaste entrepôt pour la contrebande qui irrigue le sud de la France. En 1755, banni de Paris pour des affaires de jeu, et réfugié en terre papale à Avignon, l'aventurier-polygraphe-espion-maquereau, ami de Casanova, Ange Goudar (1720-1791) publie cette contribution en faveur de la liberté du commerce. Né à Montpellier, fils d'un inspecteur général du commerce du Languedoc, considéré comme un "économiste" après avoir mené entre autres des missions en ce domaine au Portugal, c'est ainsi es qualité que Goudar apporte sa contribution à la "querelle des toiles peintes". Entre 1755 et 1759 ce débat, aiguillonné par les économistes, dont ceux du cercle de Gournay (voir n° ZZ VÉRON DUVERGER), se développe sur l'opportunité d'abolir une prohibition considérée comme inutile et dommageable au commerce. Extremely rare French-Arab dictionary, slanted toward those doing business in the Levant. Brown paper-covered hard boards are worn at all edges. Both board…s detached, spine perished. Front end paper has some small marks and scars, first blank detached, has old ink ownership inscript which has been scratched out. Foxing throughout, very occasional small ink blots in both black and brown ink, sometimes affecting text although generally minimally. Last blank detached, has some old notes and mathematical sums in ink, last end papers has a few small scars and marks. Usable as is but would benefit from some restoration.; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

(Blackmer) Hasselquist undertook his extensive travels in Asia Minor, Egypt, Cyprus, and Palestine, at the urging of Linnaeus, his teacher at Uppsala, who helped him to raise money to finance the journey. He died at Smyrna in 1752 when he was about to return to Sweden with a rich collection of natural history specimens. His valuable journal, observations, and descriptions, were edited by Linnaeus and first published in Swedish in 1757. A Materia Medica and accounts of diseases and remedies are given on pp. 293-394. Blackmer dit qu'il s'agit de la première histoire naturelle systématique de la Terre Sainte. Frédéric Hasselquist était un naturaliste suédois, élève de Linné. Malgré une mauvaise santé, il entreprit un voyage au Levant. Il y étudia particulièrement l'histoire naturelle de la Palestine et de l'Égypte, et rassembla de riches collections. Mais il mourut à Smyrne en 1752. La Reine de Suède acheta ses collections pour les musées nationaux et Liné utilisa son herbier pour sa Flora Palestina et publia ses observations et ses recherches. Bon exemplaire malgré les petits défauts signalés. 1769.
