Francois Perrier hatte als Lehrer von Charles le Brun großen Einfluss auf die französische Malerei. Er wurde in Pontarlier geboren und ging 1625 nach Rom um bei Giovanni Lanfranco zu lernen. 1630 arbeitet er mit dem Hofmaler Simon Vouet zusammen in Paris. Von 1632 bis 1634 war er der Lehrer von Charles le Brun, auf welchen er eintscheidenden Einfluss hatte. 1635 zieht Francois Perrier wieder nach Rom, wo er an den Fresken des Palazzo Peretti-Almagià arbeitet. 1645 arbeitet er mit Eustache Le Sueur am Hôtel Lambert. 1648 gründet er mit zwölf anderen Künstlern die Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. - Die meisten seiner Werke sind heute leider verschollen. -- -- Perrier was born in Pontarlier. During the years 16201625, he was the pupil of Giovanni Lanfranco in Rome. 1630 he returned to Paris and worked in the classsicising circle of Simon Vouet. In 16321634, he had for a pupil Charles Le Brun, destined to become the central figure of official French painting in the age of Louis XIV. 1635 he returned to Rome, where he publicated his repertory of etchings of classical models. 1645 he painted the ceiling of the gallery of the Hotel de la Vrilliere and worked with Eustache Le Sueur on the cabinet de l'amour in the Hotel Lambert. Howe was born in 1907; I cannot find when he died but it must have been 1981 or 1982, as there is a short obituary affixed to the rear pastedown that says he died at 74. Howe taught at Louisville from 1942-1973; Buckler (1945-2011) earned his BA from Louisville in 1967. Signed by Author(s).

Condition: Très bon état. in-12, plein vélin ivoire, dos lisse orné aux petits fers dorés, pièces de titre et d'auteur de maroquin noir, tranches dorées, 581 pp. + table (12 p.). Deuxième édition après celle donnée par le même éditeur en 1556. Il s'agit d'une adaptation d'une chronique du prédicateur franciscain Fray Antonio de Guevara (v. 1480 - 1545), d'abord parue à Valladolïd en 1539. On la trouve parfois réunie comme supplément à la série des Vies des hommes illustres de Plutarque également publiée par Vascosan en cette année 1567. Michel de Vascosan, qui rappelle son titre d'imprimeur du roi en tête de cette belle édition, fut actif à Paris de 1532 à 1576. Il apporta un soin particulier à des traductions et des éditions de vulgarisation pour défendre la langue française, comme en témoigne la dédicace d'Antoine Allègre à Catherine de Médicis. "En cest endroict les plus seueres juges des oeuvres d'autruy, qui ne treuvent rien à leur goust, si n'est Grec ou Latin, dresseront plaincte ou calumnie de ce qu'on travaille tant pour le jourdhuy à mettre toutes bonnes choses en vulgaire François : mais pour respondre, je leur remonstre, que les Princes et Gentilshommes (pour lesquels principalement est ceste uvre mis en lumière) ont esté, et sont tant occupez aux guerres et maniements des grandes affaires, qu'ils n'ont loysir, ny moyen d'employer le temps, pour apprendre les preceptes requis à l'intelligence desdictes langues". Ex-libris gravé Charles Moncorgé. Exemplaire très bien conservé (155 x 100 mm) remonté dans une agréable reliure postérieure légèrement plus grande (170 x 115 mm).
