Un essai cher ami, rien de plus [.] de style aussi direct que possible où j'ai essayé de conter impartialement les derniers jours d'un des vieux réfractaires "ondoyants et divers" comme toutes les révolutions en ont probablement suscités ! [.] Comme la plupart d'entre nous, ils seraient peut-être à la fois victimes et "victimaires". Cause première et aspect réflexe. Des hommes gros !! Leur seul tort - si tort il y a - serait donc d'avoir voulu paraître des héros. Ils sentirent vite combien ce rôle est difficile à tenir au-delà de cinq minutes. y suppléant par des galons de titres, des longs sabres mal faits à leur taille ils prêtèrent à rire. Aussi bien qu'un épigraphe la parole d'Henri Heine pourrait se placer en conclusion : "Du sublime au ridicule - etc" On constatera que l'article composé par Bougenier, dont les épreuves corrigées sont reliées en fin d'ouvrage, ([2] ff., quelques corrections à l'encre), reprend de nombreux passages de la lettre : "Et comme la plupart d'entre nous, ils seraient peut-être à la fois victilme et bourreaux. Ils ne furent que des hommes avec leurs vices et leurs qualités, n'ayant pour seul tort que d'avoir voulu paraître des Héros. Ils sentirent vite combien ce rôle est difficile à tenir au-delà de quelques minutes, et ils y suppléèrent par des galons, des titres, de longs sabres mal faits à leurs tailles, véritable mascarade de carnaval. Ainsi affublés, ils caracolèrent sur les boulevards et dans les cafés, où ils prêtèrent à rire, tandis que les insurgés simples et convaincus luttaient jusqu'à la mort. Le mur sanglant du Père Lachaise n'en est-il pas le témoignage impérissable ? C'est sans doute, mon cher Deffoux, ce qui vous a fait mettre en épigraphe la parole d'Henri Heine si éloquemment vraie : "Du sublime au ridicule, il n'y a qu'un pas." Truffé : - du bulletin de souscription ([1] f. volant) - de 2 coupures de presse : un article de A. Freddy (Armée et Marine, octobre 1913, [1] f. volant), et un exemplaire de l'article d'Alfred Bougenier "Propos d'un Solitaire, Psychologie du Communard", paru dans L'avenir de la Seine le 1er juillet 1913 ([2] ff. volants). La préface d'Henri Céard et les deux nouvelles complémentaires ("Foire aux Pains d'épices" et "Nogent-Joinville") n'apparaissent pas dans la seconde édition (Librairie de France, 1922).".
