Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Complete set, vols I-XIII 1910-1959, with vol XIV, Addenda and Corrigenda, which was not published until 1998. 14 vols bound in 15 (vol XII is in two parts). Publisher's apple-green cloth gilt, earlier volumes with top edges gilt, deckle edges. Vol XIII has minor library marks (college library label on front pastedown, small rubber stamp on front free endpaper and small oval stamp on title page), but is still a VG clean copy. A little variation in the shade of green cloth, as volumes were published over nearly half a century, but a handsome and very attractive set.***This monumental work was first published between 1887 and 1898 in 8 vols, compiled by 'G.E.C.' (George Edward Cokayne) who was Clarenceux King of Arms. The second, greatly enlarged edition was edited by Vicary Gibbs, GEC's nephew. Over the 49 years it took to publish the work he was succeeded as editor by H A Doubleday, Duncan Warrand, Lord Howard De Walden and Geoffrey H White. Vol XIV was edited by Peter W Hammond. The total number of pages in the 15 vols is 12,166, amounting to around 7,000,000 words. There were continual problems with financing the work and the introduction to vol XIV includes a short history of the trials and tribulations experienced by successive editors over several decades. The result of the labours of three generations of scholars is an indispensable work of reference that includes a full historical and genealogical account of every peerage created in the British Isles since the Conquest. Weight is about 38 kg. UK postage is included in the default postal charge.…
