Add to basketCloth. Condition: Very Good Indeed. Various (illustrator). A very scarce magazine showcasing the type available at James Upton and the Baskerville Press, and impressive work on typography. A very scarce magazine.Issues 1 to 18, and 20, of 'The Composing Stick', bound together in one volume. Issues 10 to 20 are bound with their original colourful wraps. Issues 1 to 9 were issued in plain wraps, which are not bound in.This magazine was published for printers, in which each issue is devoted to one of the series of types in the possession of James Upton and the Baskerville Press. Thus, this volume is acting as a press specimen book for Baskerville. The Baskerville Press who published this volume had no connection to John Baskerville, the pioneering printer and type designer of the eighteenth century. This magazine showcases the different types through various articles by contributors, as well as articles on the printing process. These include an article on Rolls-Royce, the younger generation working at James Upton, paper shortage, elementary geometry, Noel Montague's travels to Moscow, bookbinding in leather, the wood engravings of David Gentleman, and more.Illustrated throughout, including with fourteen colour plates and adverts. Bound in cloth. Externally, smart. Spine and extremities are faded. A few small marks to the cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. A couple of the advert plates are detached but present. Very Good Indeed. book.
