Lending record shows this book has never been borrowed. 952 pages, index, illustrated with charts, tables and diagrams. Describes the synthesis of known functional groups and highlights those that are little known or unknown. All possible combinations of heteroatoms have been surveyed, with the exception of complexes in which carbon atoms are bonded only to transition elements. The material is organised in four parts: tetracoordinated carbon atoms bearing three attached heteroatoms are covered in Part 1, and those bearing four heteroatoms in Part 2; the synthesis of tricoordinated carbon atoms with three attached heteroatoms is described in Part 3; stabilized radicals and carbocations with three attached heteroatoms are covered briefly in Part 4. Contents, appears unread, clean, tight and bright. Book.

Red cloth hardcover with gold lettering on the spine and front board, in a very good dust jacket. 1352 pages, indexes, illustrated. Discusses the synthesis of familiar functional groups, notably acetals, dithioacetals, aminals and the various mixed species. The derivatives with tetracoordinated (saturated) carbon are described in Part I and those, eg. ketene acetals, of tricoordinated carbon in Part II. However, the treatment is comprehensive and the authors have uncovered much fascinating chemistry concerning less familiar groups, including some like geminal halohydrins, halo amines and diols that are often unstable. A surprisingly large number of compounds having two metals attached to the same carbon have been located in the literature, and the abundance of phosphorus derivatives, eg. those with geminal nitrogen functions, reflects their importance as biologically active species and intermediates in synthesis. Part III consists of a single, short chapter describing dicoordinate carbon (carbenes) and examples of carbon cations, anions and radicals. Emphasis is placed on the synthesis of isolable species rather than the transient intermediates of organic reactions. Contents, clean, tight and bright. Book.

Red cloth hardcover with gold lettering on the spine and front board, in a very good dust jacket. 1441 pages, indexes, illustrated. Describes all methods for the synthesis of compounds containing a carbon atom singly bonded to a heteroatom substituent. The Volume is arranged in three parts dealing with sp3, sp2 and sp carbon linked to the heteroatoms. For each section careful attention has been given to various features such as substitution patterns, ring effects, strain effects, neighbouring functionality, stereochemistry, etc. which could mediate the synthesis pathway. Emphasis has also been given to the most convenient and practical preparation of the various functional groups. Critical assessment of the procedures allows the reader to select methods most appropriate for their needs. In this Volume the heteroatom may also be metallic and therefore reflect a highly polarised bonding arrangement with the carbon substituent. Compounds containing single bonds between carbon and heterofunctional groups constitute the largest class and most commonly transformed organic functional groups. Contents, clean, tight and bright. Book.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 0080423248. Red cloth hardcover with gold lettering on the spine and front board, in a very good dust jacket. 941 pages, indexes, illustrated. Summarises contemporary methods for the synthesis of functional groups where carbon is attached to a heteroatom (notably oxygen, nitrogen, and sulphur) by a double or triple bond. The synthesis of all types of carbon and heteroatom substituted, and unsaturated derivatives are brought together in a coherent fashion, and where possible emphasis has been placed on selectivity and efficiency, together with practical applications in real situations in synthetic chemistry. Thus, the Volume covers synthetic methods for aldehydes and ketones, with their sulphur (ie. thioaldehydes and thioketones), selenium, tellurium, nitrogen (ie. imines, oximes and hydrazones, including iminium salts and diazo compounds), phosphorus and metal/metalloid analogues. Synthetic methods for heteroatom substituted aldehydes and ketones and their analogues, eg. carbonyl ylides, are also included, and a thorough account of ketenes and ketenimines and their various heteroatom and metal analogues is given. The Volume also covers the unique chemistry associated with the synthesis of nitriles and N-substituted nitriles, together with isonitriles and all their heteroanalogues. Contents, clean, tight and bright. Book.
