The work is taken from the fourth English edition (1786), and was reprinted in America as late as 1813. It was in this form that the rights to Perry's Dictionary were acquired by Charles and George Merriam, who published it as their first book in Brookfield, Massachusetts in 1801, and their successful venture with Perry paved the way for them to acquire the rights to Noah Webster's American Dictionary in 1844.
