Pages lightly aged but otherwise clean and unmarked with occasional light spotting. NOT Ex-library. NO remainder marks. Some black and white illustrations. Luigi Martini (1803 - Mantua ,1877) was an Italian priest, rector of the seminary and vicar capitular of Mantua. Martini was appointed to spiritually assist the the "Martyrs of Belfiore", who were the first group of Italian patriots sentenced to death by hanging in Mantua between 1852 and 1855, at the height of the Italian revolution. Martini published the Confortario di Mantua in 1867 in order to preserve the memory of the Martyrs of Belfiore. [From the Prologo] Il giusto, il ver, la libertà sospiro. Prendo a dire del Confortatorio di Mantova negli anni a noi vicini 1851, '52, '53 e '55 essendone stato testimonio oculare, e auricolare. Scrivo non come poeta, o romanziere, ma come storico fedele, e sacerdote cattolico. Nessuno quindi creda che io sia per fare l'apoteosi alla congiura, o per descrivere poetiche fantasie ; mostrerò come quegli uomini fossero sinceramente cattolici e sinceramente italiani; come essi sentissero profondamente la Religione, e ne' suoi sacramenti avessero quella tranquillità, forza e coraggio onde si resero in esempio di eroica fortezza e carità. Confesso di essere italiano anch'io, ma confesso insieme di essere cattolico e di riputare mia gloria il professare la fede della Chiesa cattolica. La materia è copiosa assai più che non sembri a prima vista. Imperocché le anime buone e grandi anche nel breve giro di pochi giorni sanno fare cose molte e gloriose. E gli undici generosi ed invitti propugnatori della libertà e dell'indipendenza d'Italia, dei quali descriverà il Confortatorio, erano senza dubbio anime buone e di non comune levatura. In essi era potente l'amore della Patria, come era divina la forza della religione, ond'ebbero sublimata la mente, e confortato il cuore. Quantunque incatenati, e chiusi in breve segreta, sapevano e sentivano di essere liberi ed italiani; e perciò la loro morte fu una solenne smentita a certi beffardi, i quali non si vergognarono di mormorare che gli Italiani non saprebbero guardare impavidi la morte, nè calmi salire il patibolo, dando intrepidamente il collo al capestro strozzatore.E però se taluno volesse leggere queste meste pagine per vaghezza, o brama di trovarvi poesie, romanze, esagerazioni, odio, scetticismo, irreligiosità, aspirazioni di vendetta, di Vespri Siciliani e che so io, getti pure lontano da sé il libro, perchè non leggerebbe che semplici narrazioni di fatti umani, di sentimenti pacifici, e modesti; tali però che rivelano sempre robustezza di pensiero, tenacità di proposito, maschia pietà di cuore, un'anima grande.
